blowing gfci

Just set up my tent and i am using a 400 watt with dimmable ballast and a timer.Fist couple time i plugged it in with the timer the breaker popped.After a few tries it worked fine.When i would switch the timer to the timing mode it pops and keeps popping.Again after a while i set it back to on it works fine.This circuit was put in a few years ago for my work bench and there is nothing running on it with the light.Is the timer bad maybe?

Is there another gfi outlet on this same circuit? Because that is a no-no, and results in constant tripping.

well.... what happens when you plug in without the timer?

Seems like a very easy thing to test... you tell us, is the timer bad?

seems to work ok.I am guessing it's the timer although it came out of the box brand new could be bad.Just wanted to make sure.Thank all

ok, here comes a good question,, why run a grow light on a gfci?,, the light is not over a hot tub ( code for hot tubs is gfci breaker),, just use a regular breaker in the box,, yes no?

i have it set in the cellar and this is the only outlet with the exception of the washer and dryer outlets.if it's making the gfci pop when it shuts off then i would be resetting the breaker every time.
