BOG Sour bubble and Sour Grape soil grow

Hey guys,

Breaking out the BOG gear with Sour Bubble and Sour Grape. The plan is to grow out 12 plants for a little pheno hunt so I can run clones later. They'll start under a 100 PLL fixture in a 3x2 space and after a longggg veg, move into a 3.5x3 flower room which will have either a 400 watt HPS or hopefully 400-500 watts of COB LED lights. There is a batch of auto's in my flowering closet right now so the veg will have to be 2.5 months from germ.

Quick backstory, I was planning on growing out BOG Sour Lifesaver I got from the seedbay in February. Popped all 10 seeds, none germinated. Thought it was user error and bought another pack. Still zero germ rates. I contacted BOG and Pat told me the seeds on the bay are wicked old and SHOULD BE AVOIDED. So for anyone out there wondering, don't get BOG seeds from the bay. You can tell if it's an old pack because the old one's don't have the alien logo on them, I've included a picture. You've been warned....

Anyways, I popped 12 seeds two days ago using sand paper and seedling heat pad. 10 germinated by this morning and I moved them to little square pots. I'm still waiting on the other two seeds.

Also, I'm using root organics soil, root organics bennies, general organic line up and I'm liming the soil.
Final pot size is still undecided.

Peace and Love,

Update:

So 10 seeds have broken surface. The one seed didn't germinate. it's because the seed shell was so damn hard even after sanding, the seedling couldn't break through. I tried to crack it open manually, but I didn't have enough finesse and killed the poor thing. The other seed germinated, but hours after it broke the surface, instantly died. I have no idea why, but as the seedling began to emerge from the soil, the stem was brown and wrinkly instead of white and healthy. I've seen this happen before! Germinating 2 more seeds to replace them.

Out of the 10 seedlings that currently germinated, 1 sour bubble and 1 sour grape seedling exhibited extremely think and long hairs on its stem and cotyledon. I was going to snap a pick today, but the hairs seemed to have died down to normal-ish sized. They still have a fuzzier than average look to them though. The crazy looking hairs only lasted the day after the seedling broke surface. I read somewhere that Subcool says extreme hair growth on seedlings is a sign of good resin production later on. Hopefully this is true and these are females!

Update: day 22 from sprout

The gang is doing fine for the most part. They're at they're 3rd-4th node and I'm going to transplant them into 3 gallon grow bags (first time im using these) in the next day or too. After they reach 6 of 7 nodes, I'm going to top them and sex the tops in a cup of water. I'm also going to be trying out blumats for the first time! So yeah..blumats....:fire:

The sour grapes are super healthy and none of them showed signs of plant sickness. The sour bubbles on the other hand have been much more prone to stress and 3 of them are displaying strange symptoms. White marbling, leaf clawing and deformed leaves. I'll post pics. If you guys think you know what it is, lets hear it! I'll admit, the first 2 weeks I put the gang through the ringer. I had 24 hour light running at first (bc I had sprouted a couple seeds after some seedlings died and wanted them to catch up) plus a heat wave so temps were going well into the 90's. Now and for the past week, I've had the temps under control after switching to 18/6 with the lights being off during the hottest part of the day. Now the worst it gets is 80, although I'm worried about light leak :wall:

001.jpg
^the gang. Shortest, prettiest veggers I've even scene in real life and the internet. Slow as hell though. A friend had planted some trainwreck about the same time and it's much further along. These plants are just starting to take off now so its time to transplant.

003.jpg
^this sour bubble had leaf deformations, but it seemed to grow out of it. I think this was heat stress related.
004.jpg
^another non-perfect sour bubble. None of the other plants share the leaf yellowing

006.jpg
^this is one of the ones that bugs me. It has white stuff on/in the leaves, it looks like hard water stains. Also the leaves are clawing and there is less vigor. I have two sour bubbles like this. They're not growing out of it. The new growth has it too. Anyone know what this is?

005.jpg
^the other clawed bubble. it has less white stuff on it than the other one, but it is still noticeable in person.
008.jpg ^Now for some healthy ones! sour grape!
010.jpg
^this is my "fuzzy sour grape" it's the shortest of the other sour grapes, but it has the tightest nodes and fattest leaves. I'm thinking its a sour bubble dominate female  fingers crossed

012.jpg
^this is my "fuzzy sour bubble." it also happens to be the shortest of the sour bubble plants (the first set of leaves touches the ground lol) and has the fattest leaves of the sour bubbles as well!

Update: day 30 from sprout

I topped them! They each had 6ish nodes and I left two nodes worth of side branching so the plants can grow four tops. The tops went onto styrofoam platform floating in water in 12/12 light so I can find the ladies! Also, I hooked up the blumat system. It seems to work but it hasn't been long enough to know if it's dialed in.

008.jpg ^Before topping at day 30 veg. They're doing well!

012.jpg
^After topping, Ouch! Now I know why I don't see that many topped sour bubbles and sb crosses. It took so long to veg and the topping is definitely going to stunt them hardcore. The good news is I'll be able to get the males out and pot up the females early.

009.jpg
^The sex machine! I've never sexed in plain water like this before but I hear in 7-10 days under 12/12 I'll know the sex.

im not sure what the white stuff is on your sour bubble or why they are clawing? possible nitrogen excess? how are your sour bubble now? have they recovered? christ the good ol blumat....havnt heard of them for over 10yrs?, got some laying around here somewhere lol. looks like a clean neat setup you got, goodluck with it man

Yes the Blumats! I didn't know they were that old. Probably not popular because of the cost compared to dippers, but I think they'll do a better job maintaining an ideal moisture level.

One of the clawed sour bubbles only had the clawed/white action at one node. It grew out of it and became the fastest growing sour bubble. The other clawed bubble that was more stunted still has the white stuff and is very stunted. Looking more closely its like a ring of white marbling going around the edge of the leaf. I'll try to get a pic later.

good to hear 1 sour bubble is feeling better, the one with the white stuff can you cut the affected areas off without damaging it too badly? sounds like some form of mould growth? tony green on tony greens tortured beans thread is probably your best go to source for info about sour bubble, he has extensive knowledge of that strain, i would chase him up and ask if he can help you with your quest

quote from tony greens tortured beans thread - 'Sour Bubble. She vegs super slow, probably twice as long as your normal plants you run to get the same size, most likely. Fast, potent, Minimal stretch. Buds dense enough to break grinders, simply amazing resin production is found in special phenos, tastes from hash to sweet earthyness kushness to the more rare sour/citrus, more rare phenos that are branchier and thinner stemmed and leaved can be found, easier the early the BX to get the sour. The smoke for me is my pain grail. It calms my back spasms and has given me back some mobility in life. I used to have to walk like an old man, now I walk just kinda slow ha. Havent had a spasm attack in over a year knock on wood. Anti inflammatory properties are simply a grace from god, that being said you gotta work her and take the time to grow em big for good yield...slow, painful veg... worth every day ha!

Breeding wise she breeds true for many many traits and will dominate F1 and will take several outcrosses before she loosens up her grip on dominating the pheotype, generally.

I have seen outstanding results when mixed with more pure sativas,,, she will eat up most indica crosses ha. I love her to death'.

Yeah I started hearing about Tony's Sour Bubble breeding project right after I picked up the BOG stuff and it definitely peaked my interest. I just might have to pick up a pack of the gorilla bubble... As for the sick little runt, I'm not too worried about it. It's definitely not mold or something else growing on it. I think it will grow out of it like the other sourb and I'll chuck it out if it ends up being a male. Thanks for the thread forward man, I'll be sure to keep updating as long as these babies are alive!

I tried bogs sour bubble bx3 when it was first released. I've never seen anything so slow in my life. Chucked all of them in the trash. lol

Update: 51 days from sprout

Pah, yes these are the slowest veggers I have seen as well, but I wouldn't think of throwing them in the trash haha! I don't really mind the slow veg bc it works with my current flower/veg room cycle.

So after semi successfully sexing the clones in water, I have 4 confirmed females 1 male (which I'm keeping for breeding purposes) and 2 non-sexed plants. I cleared out the rest of the males to make mores space.

The water cloning thing was an interesting experience. The space the cloning rig was set up had absolutely no air circulation. It was a cabinet shelf left shut, so it wasn't an ideal setting. After 7 days of 12/12 light, the clones showed roots but no sex. After 10 days, the first males began to show. The females did not appear until after 14 days in the cloner. By then the roots were very long (about a foot) and the clones were struggling to survive. 2 clones that where in a poorly lit spot did not show sex. I planted one clone to continue to see what its sex will be and the other clone died.

This method of cloning was definitely worth it for me because I got to clear out some space for my females to veg. Next time I will create a better environment for the clones (air circulation, decent lighting, correct temps) so they show sex faster. Both sour bubble and sour grape are not showing pre-flowers yet so the clones beat the pre-flowers to it.

ALSO, another benefit was that this cloning method revealed a stud male for me which I decided to keep for making seeds. When I flowered the clones, one male in particular exhibited some desirable traits. Crazy musky funk that smells like ivory soap and mothballs (lol sounds sorta nasty but w/e) as well as visible trichomes around the male flower. It instantly stood out from the rest of the pack. In fact, this male clone showed its sex super late around the time of the females. I was actually hoping this guy was going to be a female because it looked frostier than it's sisters before it showed its balls. This male is much darker and greasier than the other sour bubbles and has good side branching. Sorry, no pics of the clone, but I'll be posting pics of the male when I flower it out. That is...after I figure out how I'm going to do that haha!

001.jpg

^Male is off to the right here. Also, partly why the runt is so behind is because it was transplanted from a cup really late.

003.jpg
^Branchy sour grape, confirmed female

005.jpg

^The runty sour bubble. The white stuff is definitely geneticly based marbling of some sort. It might be a male, I'm still flowering out the clone lol.

^My stud male! Its the dark, greasy, soap/mothball pheno (identified by Phoenix in his 2010 sour bubble thread)
009.jpg
^Sour Bubble corn stalk pheno topped once, confirmed female. This girl is super vigorous (for sour bubble ha). Huge leaves and faster than the sour grape

^011.jpg
^Sour bubble healthy runt (the fuzzy one). Stem rubs smells piney so far. Shortest, tightest and really slow growing. Lots of nodes though.

014.jpg
^Sour grape unconfirmed. corn stalk pheno. There is another sour grape unconfirmed that looks just like this one.

This lot is going to spend another 10-14 days in the veg room (going to harvest my Blitzoid autos soon) and then I'll pot up and move to the 400 watt flower room. In the flower room, I'm going to veg another week to get the roots going in the new pots. So 3 more weeks of veg! Yeah!

I'm picking up 2 sour grape seeds that were found in a bud tried the smoke & it's definitely worth growing
Very Cool. I might have to run more seeds to find a keeper. I have 7 more seeds. Can you remember the taste and the experience you had smoking it?
