Bought a Sweet Grow Cabinet from Goodwill for $50... now i need your help (pics)

Hello my fellow marijuana enthusiast,

I took my first major step in my first small time personal grow operation. I thought about spending 100 dollars on a darkroom grow tent for a while when my buddy suggest I go to Goodwill and look for an armoire and low and behold I found one that I had to have immediately. It is roughly 3 feet wide by almost 2 feet deep and it blends with my place perfectly. I live in a single apartment so stealth is a priority. It has three holds in the back panel which at first I thought were a negative characteristic but I thought a little harder. Now that I have these holes I don't have to cut some for the electrical outlets. Now i can just tape or seal up the holes and the wires running through it.

I plan to order a 150 watt HPS and a Carbon filter/Inline fan combo for about 280. This will be enough for two mature plants (which is all I will need). With the bottom area I might get a little creative and make a cloning area. It sure does have some potential. The cabinet is also right by the A/C vent so I will def be able to keep it cool.

I definitely have some light leak issues which is where you guys come in. I have some leaks at the hinges and at joint where the two doors meet. Any suggestions for me at all? Anything from light leaks to construction. Mylar or Paint?

Thanks

awesome cab. I would get some white paint or Mylar (whichever you can afford). I've heard of people using the spray foam/sealant for light leaks. Oh, and definitely make the top part flower and the bottom part a veg/clone area with CFL's to reduce heat. And if it gets too hot you could always make a duct from the room A/C to your cab. The potential is endless........I'm jealous :fire:

I would take out those two vertical sections at the bottom and split that little area up 35/65 for a cloning area and a veg area. Throw a few CFL's in each area and you could start a nice SOG to flower under the 150 watt HPS up top

isn't it tho... I saw it at Goodwill and thought that this is fate. I plan to put pad locks on both doors so maintnence (who is already pretty cool) can't just walk in and investigate. I plan to do my first grow with my 150 watt HPS from seed. Once I establish a good mother I plan to clone it and set up a few small CFLs in the bottom to root them for about a month. Then movem back up. I plan to do a grow journal and am very excited. Anymore tips?

Yeah I was thinking it would be better without the two walls on bottom but they looked like they were supporting it so didn't mention it.

I would get a few fans to throw in there as an intake and exhaust at least. That's another possibility for those holes in the back

oh yeah def newb,

I am gonna have a 4inch inline fan and 4inch carbon filter for my exhaust so my place will be smelling good and a 4 inch duct fan for the intake. I haven't decided whether to drill some new holes for my exhaust (because if i put that big fan and filter on the top hole, i feel it will get in the way of my light and i won't be able to raise it to its full height). Should be pretty effective

Here's my cabinet...give you some ideas.

You will need to completely replace the back with a good plywood..not particle wood. That thin shit won't do.

Remove that middle shelf and make it one big cabinet.

If you're using a HPS system, you will need an excellent ventilation system...preferably a sealed reflector and an very high velocity inline fan.

For sealing your door, there's a sponge like material with a self adhesive back...works great and also the door flap stuff...light out isn't as bad as light in.

When you're finished, get inside your cabinet and sit in there for about 5 minutes until you're eyes completely adjust and use a caulking to seal small light leaks.

Light leaks and heat are your biggest obsticles. GL

wow that is one impressive cabinet. I don't think i am gonna be able to get that middle part out. I tried moving it and it seems like it is bolted/screwed in pretty good. I sorta like it how it is.

Why would i need a plywood back? The back now is a thin wood. Sure its not plywood but its pretty sturdy. Any specific reason? I would mount the fan and carbon filter on the side wall where there is plenty of room.

Where do you get that sponge material at and does it have a name? Looks great, just need some help locating it.

Thanks again

gidday, i just run a line of reflective (silvery) insulation tape right down my door cracks, it hasnt let me down yet! the stuff im referring too is used to tape the seems between 2 sheets of HIGH quality commercial grade insulation, so its the bomb, and its SUPER shiny, so works VERY nicely with a mylar room :D. btw if u can mylar, reflects far more than white paint! just a $#^*$%&( to put up by yourself sometimes! take it easy mate and gl, keep me posted! or pm for any help if you need, i do electrical work.. hint hint ;)

Thanks for the compliment! I actually bought my clone cabinet at the goodwill.

The brand for the seal is called Comfort Seal, they make the door bottom seals and the sponge shit too. Any place like home depot, lowes, menards, etc will have it.

The reason you want something else back there (other than the fact there's holes in it)is because that shit won't hold up over time, it's going to warp from the heat and humidity, its going to leak light IN and odor OUT.

Plus, the odor issue.

p.s. there really won't be THAT much heat. I'll have a 150 watt hps being cooled by an 4 inch inline exhaust fan and a standard fan for a breeze. I think i'll be ok on the heat side. Now humidity on the other hand...
