Alright fello riu's.... So i plan on starting a small dwc system.. like 4 plants small. My question to u all is.. When the plant starts gettin big and the roots are starting to fill up the res. doesn't this block the airstones from working the way the should? Or what? Again i appoligze if the questions are noobish! but just wanna get shit so its good 2 go. Also if anyone has a really good link to a DIY DWC 4 plant setup that would also be greatly appreciated!! I've done a few soil grow's but i see way better results with people runnin these setups.

Thanks

You do need to make sure that your root zone has enough room to allow proper oxygenation of the water. If you are planning on 4 plants, you’re going to need at least 1-2 feet between each plant, and about 3-5 gallons of root zone growing space per plant.

Not having enough root zone area can promote root rot, increase heat buildup, and stunt your plants progress.

Thanks a lot man! that helps alot. +rep for u for the help!

I've grown in soil a few times now.. but want to switch to a dwc setup. I've seen better plants in the dwc so i'm gonna try it also =)

You will need a pH kit
pH up and down
H202 because it keeps fungus and infection from killing your plants. I use about 25 mL for my 10 gal res every 5 days. (I have 3% some say its dirty but whatever my plants love me, I like the 3% because it doesn't affect pH, just stops root rot)

Here's what I've been using for root protection etc. in my setup:

CanadianXpress Wilt Guard and Regen-A-Root ... Not sure if it actually does anything, but hopefully it's helping, use 1ml of each per Litre of water.

And yes you will see much better results in these setups than soil - IF you know what you're doing!!! ... And you seem to be doing your research so shouldn't take you long to master it! - I'm new to it too, the soil background helps but Hydro is a whole new venture, a lot of different things to deal with. Just so you know I'm not a hydro jock, I loved organic soil grows, but when I gave the hydro/aero side of things a shot it just bedazzled me lol - Now I think I'm converted for good! lol

If you're going full DWC and are worried about the air stones not doing their job properly, you can always put a small water pump (or 2) in there either just pumping straight through to circulate the water, or with a pipe coming up out the water and splashing back down into the rez. Just some other ideas for ya!

Cheers!

My how-to on building a DWC system, fast and easy in under 5 minutes.

You need 3-5 gallons per plant. Try to keep your airstone in the center of the bucket if possible for best aeration, and most airstones won't get clogged with roots due to air pressure pushing the roots away. If you use a 6 inch long airstone or one of the two or three inch wide circular airstones you shouldn't have to worry about lack of oxygen even when your bucket gets cramped with roots. This assumes you're dong it in a single-bucket per plant.

I grow herbs of other sorts in various-sized containers. DWC can work for just about any sized container that has a pull-off lid.
