BRF Cake Turned Wicked!

I am fairly new to mushroom cultivation. So far I have only dabbled with PF tek. I have a cake that started pinning a few days ago (first flush) and looked great. The strain is either b+ or PES Hawaiian. Upon this morning’s inspection, I find a cake full of mutants. The immature mushrooms appear curled and dark in color. Some of the caps are split. My gut tells me the problem may be over misting, too much moisture. I went ahead and picked all the mushrooms off and currently have the cake soaking for 24 hours.

I have 2 questions for the experienced mycologist out there:

What caused this flush to turn?
Are the mushrooms worth drying?

Pics: I attached 3 pics. One shows the pinning and the other 2 are of the nasty mutants. These pics are 24 hours apart.

in all my days of harvesting ive never seen anything like that...yikes. I would start over wouldnt even waste the time trying them but thats just me.

Yea they are knarly looking little fuckers, lol. I should also add that I mist/fan every 6 hours. There are several other cakes in the fc that seem fine but they are also on their second flush (not sure if that makes any difference).

when i read the title to the thread i thought it might be a recipe for a spaced out birthday cake lol. but im glad to have stumbled across it, i have been wanting to grow some shrooms for a while now but have not got a clue where to start. i mean i know i can order the spore kits but in terms of growing them not a clue. are there any threads on riu teaching you ?? giving me any info would be great thanks guys and sorry about intruding on your thread but you seem like the people i need to chat to. hope you get some answers on whats happened wish i could help.

Not sure why they turned out like that but anything growing off the cake is worth keeping, it'll still make you trip.

Thanks 420God. Yea I think Ill dry them and toss em in the personal stash. They smell fine and dont appear to have mold growing on them.

Mushrooms that don't really turn into mushrooms are called aborts and I believe can be even more potent than the mushrooms.

I get weird growths all the time and don't pay much attention to them.

Heres a few more pics after I broke/cleaned them up a bit. Of course they are discolored a little due to bruising. I took a close-up of one that has a dark stem. What do you guys think? Again they smell fine and don’t appear to be slimy.
