EFFECT OF CHILLING AND DAY LENGTH ON RUNNER OF EVERBEARING TYPE STRAWBERRY

Authors: M. Hamano, H. Yamazaki, M. Morishita, S. Imada Keywords: 'Natsuakari', 'Dekoruju', cold incubator Abstract:
Recently our research center developed two everbearing strawberry cultivars, ‘Natsuakari’ and ‘Dekoruju’. Everbearing strawberry plants often produce few runners and a shortage of daughter plants could prevent rapid diffusion of these cultivars. We investigated some environmental factors that could have an effect on runnering. Fresh plants were rooted in pots during summer and kept outdoors. After they received respectively 0, 700, 1000, 1500 and 2000h of chilling (<5°C), plants were transferred into a greenhouse where the temperature was set at minimum 15°C. Half the plants from each chilling treatment were exposed to natural day length and the remainder exposed to a 16h day length. Both cultivars with 1000h chilling under 16h day length produced runners, but under natural day length they did not. The 1500 and 2000h chilling treated plants produced runners regardless of day length. Potted plants kept in a greenhouse to avoid chilling were transferred into a low temperature incubator set at -1.5°C. After 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days, they were returned to a greenhouse and put under 16h day length regime. ‘Dekoruju’ plants receiving 30 days of chilling exposure produced runners while ‘Natsuakari’ needed at least 60 days to form runners. For both cultivars, plants that received 90 days of chilling produced most runners. Potted plants overwintered outdoors were grown under 10, 12h and natural day length beginning in May. Cv. ‘Natsuakari’ plants, exposure to longer day length produced more runners. For ‘Dekoruju’ exposure to natural day length resulted in fewer runners than exposure to 10 or 12h day length, perhaps as a result of increased flowering under long day conditions. In conclusion, both cultivars produced runners after receiving more than 1000h chilling outdoors provided sufficient hours in the daily light period. It was also shown that a refrigerator can be used to impose chill treatments when the natural environment is not conducive.

Yes, the best chance at getting runners is to chill chill chill.

Ya man. Jus grow weed, fuk the veggies. U can get sum cheep seeds out there. I'm sure ull make it to harvest, really its not rocket science. Sure u may run into probs and not get the best quality product in the end but ide rather a dime bag of weed then a carrot. Besides, even after u finsh veggies and switch to weed, ur still gonna come across problems. Experience is key and if ur experienced in veggied, the same rules don't apply. Don't get me wrong, ull get growing experience from veggies, but weed is a totaly different thing. Its like a pear tree and a rasberry bush. They both grow diff and like diff things like trianing, topping, nutes, lights ect. so ull have to diff things to do that u withur weed that u didn't with veggies and vice versa. All speicies of plants r there own. Sure ull learn the basics but u can do that with the weed and learn more while doing it and getting a harvest. Like r u gonna super-crop broccoli? That's my opinion. U can get female seeds for as like 2$ (ex:greenhouse seeds- big bang). sure they aint the best but better then fruit and a good place to start if ur not confedent in urself to invest more. Great growers know their plants. The more u focus on 1 kind let alone 1 veriaty(strain) the better resaults ull get. If u wanna grow veggies too jus keep them around the perimeter of ur room if u have space, plants will grow anywhere there's light shined on

Sry if it gets a lil confusing 1/2 way in my last post, I'm on my phone and can't edit on it. I also didn't know that u went threw with the veggies till after as I didn't really read through it as its based on veggies. I would also see u putting more time, effort, money and heart growing weed making u a better grower. Don't worry about the $, that comes after a harvest or 2

i cant grow weed right now anyway, the landlord is selling the property so i have to find a new place to live. besides i dont want total strangers trapsing thru my grow area sticking thier noses where it doesnt belong. Dont get me wrong, i built this whole setup with the intention of growing weed, but right now it isnt secure enough for that so im just putting the system to good use and get some mammoth veggies in the process. the pics are from day 20 from seed, its around day 30 or so and will have newer pics soon, having problems with internet connection or i would do this everyday. since these pics ive had to transplant the broccoli into one gallon buckets and the tomatoes into 5 gallon. the tomatoes growth has really started to take off in a big way. my peppers are starting to show their first signs of a growth spurt and the strawberries still lag behind.

the tomatoes will take over billyraymond. at my local hydro shop, they grew some in dwc that got huge, and did it fast. within 3 months, 6 plants had a canopy that was proabably about 6' x 12' and about 2' thick. i helped them harvest and we filled up 5 5-gallon buckets with beautiful fruits. nothing in my veggie garden has ever gotten anywhere close to the yields they got, and i'm semi-famous around these parts as a tomato guy. just a heads up - invest in some good clippers, you'll need them.

thanks for the heads up i got a good pair of clippers last year. i can see what you mean about the tomatoes already tho. they might look a little spindly in the picture but in the 10 or so days since the growth has ben exponential. in the ten days they have trippled in size and have been repotted in 6 gallon buckets. the strain i got is the heirloom varietiy known as the the "morgatge lifter" it is supposed to produce massive yields on its own so im hoping for a good harvest in this method
