My understanding is that the goal is to close the wound to keep air from exposed inner parts of the broken branch, and support the plant while it heals.
By the varied responses you probably got that all kinds of different tapes have been successful at doing that. I'm not sure about sealing out air from the outer surface, I think the wounds outer bark might heal better with some air access. After a few days, I'd remove the plastic and let it breath.
I recently abused a plant, put it in a scrog too late in veg and broke several big branches. I taped them up with electrical tape as best I could, but several of the wounds did not close all the way. So far they've all healed over and the plants looks fine. I've heard that those areas can be vulnerable to things like PM and other diseases, so its something to keep an eye out for.
