Brown stuff/residue in reservoir?

I mixed up a batch of food 7 days ago. 550ppm and 6.0ph. There is an airstone providing plenty of bubbles. Food consisted of dynagro protekt, foliage pro, and some botanicate calmag. I've checked regularly and hadn't noticed anything. Today I came in to feed for the 1st time from this batch since the initially feeding upon making the batch 7 days ago. I looked and the res has turned a tint of reddish orange, which I see often in pictures, but my batch is usually light shade of green. There is also brown residue/chunks on everything. The hoses, the vinyl tube for the airstone, the waterwand that I keep inside there, all the walls. And there are tiny pieces of brown chunks floating around. PPM has stayed the same but PH jumped to 6.4. What is all this??

YOU my friend are now growing kelp as well as weed. Congrats you have graduated from your first care free crop, to why everyone doesn't grow weed. Add janitor to your list of job titles. Dump it clean it mix some new nutes

Are you kidding me? Where the fuck did kelp come from??? I'm very clean and janitory duties are always done. I have 45 gallons of nutes here. Is there another way to fix the problem other than dumping? Is kelp had to feed?

half of the expensive nutes you use have kelp in them, kelp is a miracle additive. Try to keep all light off your nutes , this will help alot

There was a lid on the reservoir. No light got in.

If kelp is an additive then can i just feed with it?

IF it colonizes you rez it eats nitrates and leaves nitrites?? Not 100 % on the term but it is a non available form of nitrogen that is a mild poison to plants

When you say kelp i imagine the green type of seawood looking thing thats a big hype these days. This looks nothing like that, are you sure its called kelp?

Also I want to specify that this is not a DWC set up. I have a 45gal container full of purely nutrients and 10ppm RO water. With an airstone covered with a lid. The room is always dark anyway unles I go in there to work which won't be more than a couple hours.

Do you know what your Rez temp is? Below 70 you should be good. At Rez changes I always have a little black slime on my pumps hoses and filters. But I use Floralicious plus and attribute it to that. I just clean and rinse everything off. Also you might wanna add hydroguard to your Rez. A little good bacteria never hurts.

Thanks for the advice. My Rez temps were probably on the higher side. 75? What does high Rez temps do?

Got brown rings around the water line in the res? I get this too, but only when I don't change my water often enough. I usually swap the water every 4 days or so, anything over a week and I'm in trouble.

Yea I've had the water for a week I read most people said their water is fine for 2 weeks at least. So what's the brown stuff?? Take a look at my pics up top f you haven't. Is it the same for you? Is this water dangerous to feed? What does it do?

I've always assumed it was a form of mold or algae so I don't feed it and I try to avoid it. I live where it's pretty warm and don't use a chiller so make sure you keep things clean. I know using 30% hydrogen peroxide in the res will help, and if I have to be gone for a long period of time and rely on timers I'll add some to the res.

I see. Any clue as to what this is growing in here?

Prior to filling this reservoir up i had the entire thing cleaned with dish soap then cleaned with bleach then rinsed. Ive literally purge cleaned everything in my rooms.

These bacteria are everywhere, in the air, on your skin, everywhere. All they require to multiply is for their basic metabolic processes to be supported by the environment.

I use ponds for breeding fish, there it is a matter of creating a healthy environment for good bacteria. They, in turn, break down things like ammonia into nitrate and that into nitrites which is much less toxic.
