Remember that the smaller the tie material size, the closer to blade size it is, and thus, the more likely you are to cut into your stalk/stem at the pressure points. No genuine gardener would ever use kite string, or floss. Strips of cloth are what most outside gardeners use. I'm using yarn inside.
Think of it this way. Take your floss, kite string, etc. and squeeze it tightly between your thumb and a fingertip . . . now, using your other hand, jerk several inches thru your grip rapidly, you know, like a gust of wind or something.
Voila, slice.
As far as the duct tape ripping bark off , why would one need to take the tape off? Assuming it worked, the tape would be the plants "skin" . . . I wouldn't tamper with it.
