i'm a complete noob to the bushy side of growing. all mine have been xmas tree style. i've got an auto going right now, untrained, and its bushy as hell. i think it'll give at least 2z. but i've also got a nirvana snow white that was topped and one of the colas is right around 3ft tall....thats from the stem up, not the floor, and i know that having that big ass cola will yeild a ton. can a trained bushy plant yeild the same as a xmas tree style plant? i'm not talking scrog bushy either, just keeping it short.

-your question

Generally speaking a trained plant indoors will give a higher yield because its been trained for optimum yield versus xmas tree style which is basically just going to give you one big cola near your light and the lower buds getting the scraps.(outdoors its irrelevant because sun beats lamps any day) so he answer is... Yes it can often beat the xmas tree yield.

There's a whole section in the annals of grower-dom dedicated to achieving the bushy growth over the Xmas tree. It's just more desirable. Bushier means a wider canopy, i.e. more area at the very top getting full light. The colas are half the size but there are more than one, and you've got more buds being fed before the ones further down get what's left.

Look up topping, LST and FIM if you ever decide to embrace the bush.

I call it the menorah. Because holidays!

I was heart broken with my first auto ..years ago.. from then on

I decided to FIM(fuck I missed) to gain an extra few grams per plant
Fim, etc etc.... also conceals the 'give away' shape from a distance too

When you train your canopy to be wide & flat as opposed to tall & spiny your yield increases. Obviously the best bud comes from the tips of each main cola. The more colas you can produce the more top cola buds you will harvest. Their size is dependent upon your wattage but if the canopy is trained out as evenly as possible they will all be about the same uniform weight. If you allow one or more colas to grow a bit higher than the others they will become the mains & grow slightly larger than the rest.
MJ plants favor the tallest colas by growing the largest flowers on them; it is a trigger that if allowed to set will diminish the size of the lesser colas. The function of the flowers is to make seed so naturally the ladies try to make the highest flowers as large a target as possible in order to catch the pollen that hopefully doesn't exist in your grow area which will give us the nice resinous non-impregnated buds we want.
Keeping the canopy even is done many ways & each grower should find what works best for their situation. I start by fimming or topping when the clone or seedling is big enough to begin training. You want to induce the bottom branches to grow by slowing the growth of the taller branches. The top main colas can be slowly evened out by pinching at every spot on the main stem in between nodes; also called supercropping. If a cola gets too tall too fast you can always top it again to keep the side branches growing out instead of up. Once I have my colas growing in I favor the ones I want to grow by leaving them alone & gently bending down the tallest branches everyday a little bit until it starts to grow sorta horizontally. Sometimes I tie a branch down to the handle on side of the pot to limit its height. Once the plant is nice & wide you can train it further under a scrog screen but at some point the plant will just grow the way you trained it to. The only problem is that training takes time in veg plus recovery but in the end the increased yield is worth it.
