Calling all breeders!

Hey guys,

Heres the deal. I'm writing some breeding/growing/genetics software. Unfortunately I'm still a newb when it comes to cultivation.

Does anyone want to help me out with my data models, breeder workflows, etc? You will be adopted into the beta testing and grandfathered in to receive a FREE membership for life (if we even expand into a paying market).

Heres a quick rundown.

It's a web application, so it will hosted by me. If necessary we will host off of US soil, maybe netherlands, to keep our data safe. God forbid, you ever get raided you won't have your details laid out for the feds. This also allows you to input your data from anywhere with an internet connection, rather than just at your home/office pc. If you have a smart phone you can do all your work in your grow room! (also there will be an iphone application developed shortly after the site goes public).

A few features (haven't worked them all out yet)

Grow Room

  • Keep information about your grow room and equipment
  • Track energy usage, multiple temperature readings per room or per light
  • Keep soil information
Plants

  • Keep growth data about your plants
  • Ability to use grow room data and plant data to create dynamic charts (compare the growth of plant A and plant B and their respective soil/lighting/temp/etc information)
  • Ability to upload pictures for all your plants
Well... what do you guys think

Anybody have any input on features they would want in their ultimate breeding/genetics software?

I've seen it. It's poor quality software... Ridiculous prices and price "levels". If I monetize my idea it would be something like 1-100 plants (unlimited other features) free for hobbyist and small caregivers, 100+ plants for like 0.99/mo for dispensary owners or something.

That's an IF. I may not even do that, since this is for caregivers

I know I can make better software, more usable, more accessible... It's what I do for a living.

Whats up Brandon. Been keeping data for years and have actually looked into genetic software for cannabis. What kind of software are you trying to design? I think the problem with designing any genetic software for cannabis is the lack of research being done on the cannabis genome. Most genetic software on the market is geared toward the human genome and specific markers. Unfortunately because of the illegality of cannabis there is very little known about the cannabis genome, at least compared to other plants and animals.

Well unfortunately like you said, little is known about the cannabis genome. The software that I'm proposing would be more like tracking YOUR genetics. For example... you have some jack herer clones that you love. Input it's data into the system (known genetics, phenotype, heights, etc). Then you get your hands on a nice ak-47 clone that you'd love to cross with the JH. Input the ak-47 into the system. Once they're both in, you can simply select 'create cross' (or whatever it will be) and select the two from your database. As your cross grows and you start selectively breeding, you keep all that data in the system. This way you can go back and look at the logs and stats and be able to tell your new cross is mold resistant at a certain temp, or that growth was stunted at certain temps or under certain lighting conditions.

Does that make sense?

Yes, you should throw together a simple demo Brandon. This is a great opportunity. And there's nothing wrong with improving what's already existing out there to make it even better. Hell this is America, yee haw!

But seriously, graphing functions like you say and maybe some way to create projections? Like growth trends, internodal spacing, time to maturity, etc.

Absolutely, I'm working on something that will let you use EVERY piece of data on all your plants. You'll goto the stats area, and pick and choose all your data and generate a graph/chart available to download in PDF form to print and pass out to your collective, or print, or email, whatever.

I'll throw something together soon. I'm working on a lot of things on the side, but I'll see what I can do.

Just in case you might like to see a model of what you want to create I am sure you can find a handful or more programs like that, that nurseries that do much breeding, and plant/bush/tree breeders in general now use.

There are other variations for farmers where there is some less flexibility in tracking, since it would normally be a tracking a different choice then the tracking of different genetic crossings someone would make themselves, but other than them being only for outdoors growing the rest is pretty much the same. The ability to chart/track different genetics, and tracking various results and how each might react to alterations in how they are grown etc.

I could not recommend one or even say how detailed some might be, but I have seen ads for them and seen them in searches. If interested you might be able to find one that has a demo version on their site where you can look around in a way more like if you were using it than just reading about it.

Nice. Yeah being able to chart certain critera over time, and then being able to layer that chart with another chart for comparison. I've got a lot of ideas, let me think about it. I had one programming class and was a computer operator in a past life, so I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous. But I can be realistically creative!
