Cameras, pictures, and rippers. Oh MY!

Greetings fellow tokers, I'd like to bring something to peoples attention. I'm sure that this has been discussed somewhere on the forum before, but it seemed under represented when I tried to find it.

Every time you take a picture with a high-end digital camera, most pre- 2005ish cameras, and all cellphones information is stored (encrypted or not) in the picture. The information is easily accessible, and sometimes contains geo-tags. The majority of cameras only contain info about the picture including camera model information, the settings used for the camera, and when it was taken. This information isn't really harmful, unless it contains geo tags. Geo tagging contains the LOCATION of the pictures, you plug the geotag into google and you can get driving directions to whatever you just took a picture of (your plants, grow room, house, etc.)

So, let's say you just harvested some chron and want to get on here to show off the yield (you braggadocio, you) so you pop those pictures on the forum. Some greasy bastard with some computer knowledge sees your pictures, saves it to his computer, accesses the information. bada boom bada bing he knows where your house is and knows that you just pulled a crop. Danger danger danger. next thing you know you've got joe blow, and his cronies kicking down your door nabbin your bud, or worse.

Do you think your pics are clean? If they aren't you might have some uninvited guests...

Do you think digital cameras have geotagging? I thought that was for phones with gps capabilities only... but please enlighten me if they do. :bigjoint:

Some digital cameras do have geotagging especially if they were made in 2008 geotagging was really popular 08 and back, usually it's only in higher end cameras though. Every camera stores some information about the picture. I've actually been looking at some threads and found a few pics with info in them.

This has been discussed over and over, i'd be surprised if anyone wasn't aware of this by now. Courtesy of facebook and such, most folk are aware of the fact that their phone has the ability to add gps coordinated to their photo's.

Well that is why I posted it in the Newbie area, for the people who haven't heard of it. I was also bring to peoples attention that digital cameras embed other information, for instance I did some research do you still use your Canon DIGITAL IXUS 65? you used it on October, 3rd 2010 at 6:17 p.m to take a picture of a yellowing fan leaf. I also found some Hexadecimal Manufacturers information from which I could probably find the serial number for your camera and prove in court you took the picture.

My canon powershot has gps which is cool cause you can create google earth files and it will zoom down to a thumbnail of the pic at the location it was taken. I use it primarily for work in the field.

Pretty sure my dslr doesn't geotag.
