Can a plant be too dense?

My plants are only 2 weeks since breaking ground and I have definately had some problems so far (Over-Nutes I think) but during that time my roots have grown like mad and the new growth which is the 3rd set of leaves is actually looking good so far but all the newer leaf growth seem really congested. They are growing so tight that they are covering each other up and it seems that everything is all bunched up together. They are growing under 23w CFLs, 1 per plant about an inch above. My first leaves are long and spread out but everything after that is really clumped together and seem to be covering each other up with about 3/8" between nodes. I'm just happy things are growing and not really concerned but just wondering if this is normal. I raised my lights up to about 2 inches above growth thinking it would cause some stretch but it's my first grow so really just experimenting. Any thoughts?

Tight nodes equals big yields.

Your plant doesn't look healthy at all. You said you had nute problems? Once I had a plant like this. It was underwatered and nute burned too early in veg and was growing like a retard. Finally after 10 weeks of flowering yielded NOTHING! Just some pistils here and there. So don't count on it.

I totally agree but every time I ask what people think is wrong with them I get a bunch of different opinions from overwater, underwater, heat stress, ph or nitrogen toxicity so I try a litle of this and a litle of that and hopefully they turn around. Overall they look wierd and the leaves are really soft and pillowey which looks a bit like the ph pictures in my books but honestly I dont know.

What is the light source? 2 23w cfl's? You need MORE and more powerful lighting!!!

What are the exposure times??

They look like they need more light, longer!
Other wise they look FINE!

Hessam, not a quality or informative answer......His will not do what yours did....

I know next to nothing but "More light"?? They aren't stretching, in fact they seem almost too short. (But like I said, I only know enough to be dangerous to my plants) Each 2 week old plant has its own 23w cfl about 1.5" above it and they get 20hrs on, 4 off. I had them 24 on but when I added some dark times the roots really seemed to take off.

I have room set up and waiting with a 600w Hortilux hps and 5 gal smartpots but was going to wait till these got a litle bigger before I transplanted. I know I should go to 1 gal pots first but don't want to transplant that many times so I will water them sparingly just around the main stalk until they grow in to the big pots.

Bet that thing could use a small HPS like $65 from eBay. Yeah, I see the issues too. But, just feed it sparingly. I've used CFL and they ok. But prefer low watt HPS or LED.

Edit. Never mind. Lol you got a 600.

Good! It's the intensity of light the kids are starting to want......The 600 will do well!

Umm, water around the edge of the solo cup to get the roots out and growing TO the moisture.......No problem in up potting to a 1g pot first. In fact a good idea! It will take less vegging in the 5 as the roots will have a better mass and take less time to begin to fill the 5.....Just be calm and be easy handed on the repotting.....You'll do fine!

Loose the clear cups and get more power full cfls or more of them lol but that plant has issues for being that young not trying to b a dick but fresh water wouldnt hurt from time to time and a bigger pot mit also help if thats a seed need mkre room for the tap root to grow so your smaller net roots have room also and it dont need fed untill its bigger or showing signs of deficiency

When you stress a plant in seedling phase or too early in veg, sometimes it results in strange deformations and behaviors (kinda like mutations) which is very difficult for the plant to recover from them. That was exactly the case with my plant. But I knew the cause and fixed it, however she carried the problems until the end.

Your right, the clear cups have to go - missed that!

It looks like a good enough time to transplant....

FINE??! So maybe you are giving a new definition of FINE which I'm not aware of!
Obviously.....

Thanks for the thoughts and tips. Since I stopped feeding them and gave a mini flush they seem to be doing better. The older growth is still damaged but not getting worse and the new growth is coming in at a good pace. Will probably transplant tomorrow or the next day.

The plants are in clear cups so I can watch the root progress but those cups sit inside red cups so no light gets to the roots.

I do about the same thing...I grow in 2 litre pop bottles then put the pop bottle in a non-transparent jar to block the light.

Nice to view the roots growing
