Yeah they look like a glass bubbler, you could turn it into a nice bong afterwards, lol. I was thinking the same thing, but they are prbably pricy, anyone got a DIY on those, you could probably make some cheap ones with little effort but I don't have one to go by.you know those things they advertise on TV..its like glass ball with a tube or something that you fill with water and stick the tube in the soil and when the soil becomes dry it waters the soil....yeah maybe look into those

1. 5 galon bucket = $3
20 lft 1/4 inch utility hose from home depot,like th stuff you use to hook up an icemaker on a refrigerator =$10
1. Barbed brass nipple with male end = $3
1. Dual male end flow regulator valve = $3
1. Large plastic tumbler drinking glass,like a big gulp cup .
You drill a hole in the base of the bucket then insert the brass valve in the bucket,attach the hose & seal off with a high quality caulking other than silicone,use a polyurethane caulk as silicone does not stick very well long term,the caulk lasts forever but refuses to bond long term.
Cut the hose a few feet away from the bucket & insert the flow valve to regulate the drip times.
Dig a small hole at the base of the plant about 1ft deep & wide enough to accomodate the plastic drinking glass,drill a hole in the drinking glass then insert the other end of the hose through the glass an inch or two then seal off with caulk around the top.
Now you place the cup with hose attached in the hole at the base of the plant & cover the cup with soil,now all you need do is to hang the bucket of water in a tree & regulate the water flow,by putting the cup under the soil less water will evaporate on hot days & more will reach the root mass,plus the hose will be protected from clogs because it's not exposed.
