You can run a 400 watt light on a 600w ballast but it has it's cons: the light's life span will shorten as it will burn the gas within it quicker due to the high wattage being fed in it. Vice versa you could also run a light with a higher wattage then the ballast and it will result in longer life span but lower output from the light as it will obviously run on the lower wattage being fed in from the ballast. If i were you i would just use the combinatoin you've got, it's no big deal, will only shorten the life abit; and in future you can run a 600w light. However you can always sell the 600W ballast and buy a 400w.

If you chance it a 400 watt bulb in a 600 watt will cause a fire. If you were smart a 600 watt MH bulb would be your best bet in a 600 watt MH ballest. 400watt to 400 watt 600 watt to 600 watt. Please remeber some places like HTGsupply.com have whats you can interchange a hps bulbwith a MH bulb.

You would be way better off running the 600 watt hps than a 400 watt mh. Its just not safe first of all and you will get so much more light out of the hps! I run hps excusivly through veg and flowering with great results. Evan a 600 watt metal halide puts off much less light than a 600 watt hps. more light = more growth more light = bigger buds more light = stronger buds smiles

unless you have convertable ballast you cant put metal halide in hps ballast. if you have hps bulb just use it you will get great results. ive been useing only hps for 30+ years!

Some say yes - some say no. Doesn´t really help the questioner at all. But this is what happens with MOST questions.
