Can I use a 250w HPS in this grow space? pic included.

I bought a 250w hps off my friend. He only wanted $50 for it so I figured I'd jump on it. If I can't make use of it now I'm sure I will be able to at some point. Do you think this room is big enough for it? The room is a good 4 feet high so there is plenty of room for heat to rise, but it is only about 2 feet wide and 18 or 20 inches deep. Will a fan be enough to keep things cool? I can't really be cutting holes in the wall for exhaust or anything like that. I never used hps before.

4 foot high and 2 foot wide, i don't really think with 3 gallon plant pots, flowering plants and a good 12-18 inches between the light and canopy that your goin to have enough space.

You sure as hell won't be able to grow in that cab with the 250w HPS without some serious ventilation
You can't just rely on the heat rising, that will not be enough and it will fry your plants

Well I think I'm going to use a small auto strain if I go for a indoor grow. I am growing outdoors this year and just mainly use this room to germ for 2-3 weeks with those little fluoros before I move them outside. I just figure I'd make use of the hps since I have it.

I agree with Tom, with 4 feet of vertical space. You are looking at about 1 foot for the pot, one foot for the lamp and hangers and one foot min. between the lamp and the top of the plants. Where do the plants go? Just an opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Yeah I see what you mean. I didn't even really think of it that way. I was looking at it from more of a heat issue.

I'm currently running a 250w HPS in my cabinet, two feet wide, 1 foot deep, 3-feet tall inside. It's a tight space, but I only need meds for myself, and I run it as productively as I can; SOG approach, short veg times, heavy LST and some judicious super-cropping. I get more then I need.

Do not underestimate heat, it will be an issue! I use a glass heat shield and run a separate intake and exhaust for my light, so I don't have to filter my bulb cooling system and thus keep the air flow at maximum efficiency.

Nice. I dunno if that would work for me. Like I said, I live with my parents and they would be pissed if I was cutting holes in the wall for exhaust fans. Only thing I could really do if put a fan inside and blow on it.

But yeah I was thinking the same thing. Get some small auto plants or some short strain. Smaller plant=smaller pot too. What kind of strains you running?

I'm 27. Just finished college and moved back in. No they don't know. They would be pretty pissed but I don't think they would like disown me or anything. Believe me, I've done worse. Yeah you do make a really good point. This was suppose to start as an outdoor grow and I was just gonna start them in the house for the first 2-3 weeks before I take them out. But since my buddy gave me this deal for the light things are starting to change. $50 for a brand new 250w HTGsupply hps is too good of a deal to pass up. Honestly, now that I'm thinking about it I might just stick to the original plan of just keeping them in my closet under the fluoros for a few more weeks then taking them out the bush. You guys are right it is a pretty stupid idea. I just got a little excited when I got this hps I guess...

OK it's been awhile since I last updated this thread but I've had this light for almost 2 weeks now and I'm really itching to use it. I did a little bit more exact measurements on the closet and it is exactly 4 1/2 feet high, 3 feet wide, and 20 inches deep. The light and ballast is from HTG and seems to be of pretty decent construction electrically speaking. The hood is a little flimsy though, but I guess it is suppose to be that way. I did a trial run outside the closet with just the hand test and both the ballast and bulb put off some decent heat. There's a shelf about a foot from the top where I can put the ballast and hang the light for the time being. I think I can pull it off. I'm going to keep the door open for now. I bought a temp/rh gauge at wal mart the other day so we'll see how it goes.

so far it's been running for about 2 hours and the room is 88 degree and the plants are about 20" away. Gonna shut it off for now I think and turn my fluoros back on. Don't want to wake up to crispy leaves tomorrow morning.

Oh the cord was long enough that I could plug it in in a different and keep it outside the closet. That should cut down on heat a good deal.
