i was just looking into these myself.. they are basically a passive hydro system.. you get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with 1/2 perlite, 1/2 vermiculate.. drill a hole two inches up from the bottom of the bucket. and place plants into bucket.. you then fill bucket up with nute mix till some comes out of hole.. there will always be a lil left in the bottom below the hole.. and then you just water and feed as normal, till you see some run off come out of the hole..
atleast this is what i got out of it..

most of the people that i know who use them really seem to love them.. the nice thing about hempys is that they allow alot of room at the bottom of the buckets for roots to breath and always have access to water and nutes without drowning like you would in a straight soil grow... i have heard that once the roots reach that bottom level, the growth really takes off.. i haven't tried them out as of yet, but have been doing some reading on them as i was thinking of trying some form of hydro and was a lil nervous about it and the hempys seem like a simple way to get your feet wet on hydro without being in over your head..

i do hempy buckets and love them i've done soil and hempy is way better in every way.
go to walmart get a 3 gallon plastic mop bucket ($2) a bag of perlite ($4) put a 7/16th hole 2 inches from the bottom of the bucket and the bag of perlite fills it perfect.any questions just ask i'll answer asap.

its so much easier if i see my plants getting nute burn i can just give them a gallon of plain water and the problem is fixed.with soil i have to wait until there dry and flush them all out by that time there looking burnt. plus i can water these every day or once a week i mix my nutes to 200ppm and 5.8 ph . the bottom 2 inches always has water its suppose to mimic your roots hitting ground water .its kind of a soil/hydro cross.

your right don't even read that tread the way i do it is better i water with about 2 cups every other day and don't have any run off.i just keep the bottom full and it works great plus they want you to use vermiculite ,that stuff is a waste it just goes to the bottom and makes a sludge.i use 100% perlite and in a 3 gallon bucket i can grow 5ft plants easy.

Can you wash and reuse the perlite?

yep wash it in a strainer and reuse it .its actually better the second time you use it because you washed all the real small stuff out.i guess you can pre wash it for the first time but i don't.the walmart stuff has a real low amount of mg nutes in it but it has no affect on the plants.its just such a small amount.i think its like $7 a bag now.i got mine just before winter for $4 a bag.
