Im not saying its bad to do it in soil. Im just saying its better to do it in soilless. It nature the plant dies and the seeds grow next season in the dead plant. And yes in soil to. I was talking mostly clones. Seedlings will grow in anything as long as you dont get them nutes for the first two weeks
I agree that cloning in a soilless medium of some sort is a little easier than soil. I think it depends on the plant. Different plants/strains like different things. It's all about finding what works for you. :bigjoint:

I put germinated seeds straight into MG seed starting mix (5-1-5). They grew fine.

I used to clone in soil, had a 25-50% success rate in a few runs.

I now clone in perilite until the plants start to get a little yellow. Once they do, I know they have roots and I get 'em to soil. Succes rate this time was 5/6, the one that died was due to me being high and forgetting the rooting compound.

Process:

Pre trim the site to be cloned while still on the plant. Leave 1-3 sets of leaves near top of site. Site should be 4-6 inches or so, not set in stone though.

Cut the shoot off at 45 degree angle, dip cut in water, and cut again (also at 45 degree angle). This gets rid of the air bubble.

Dip in rooting hormone. I use Schultz takeroot, bought at Home Depot for $5 or so. Be generous!

Plant in party cup (must make drainage hole sin bottom of cup!) filled with perilite. Give it a good soak and place in humidity dome. Wait 7-14 days for roots/yellowing. Mist or water every so often as need be.

Somebody please correct me if I have forgotten to mentin something....too high right now
