Can you tell the variety by looking at pics?

Hi folks.

I'm a true neophyte. I'm in my mid-50s and started smoking for medicinal purposes a couple of years go. Yep, believe it or not, I grew up in the 60s and 70s without ever trying weed. :-) When I decided to try it, I had no idea where to get it, but fortunately my son knew, and he got it for me.

Until I moved 2,000 miles away last summer. Now I have no connections, so I decided to grow my own. My son got some seeds for me, but he has no idea what variety they are (neither did the guy he got them from).

I've done a LOT of reading. Got a nice setup for the basement that includes a 4'x4' Sun Hut (love it). I had 20 seeds, and I decided to start all of them, figuring that only part of them would actually germinate. Wrong! Every single one germinated! So now I have 20 babies. I was planning to only have about four plants! LOL

I figure I'll lose some along the way, and when it comes time to sex them I'll probably lose another 50%, at least. But I'm still going to end up with quite a few plants. They're looking great so far (knock on wood).

I'm just wondering whether someone can tell me what variety my babies are if I post some pics. They're still pretty small (less than two weeks in veg), so I don't think it's possible to tell this early. Or is it? I suppose it's not the end of the world if I don't know what I have, but it would be nice to know. If this is a decent variety and these plants do well, I plan to keep out a mother plant and clone her.

I know so little about varietal strains. I have fibromyalgia, severe insomnia, and severe arthritis. I smoke at night to help me sleep. I really don't know what variety would be best for me, but I'm very happy to have anything at all!

Thanks for a great forum with tons of useful information. I'm completely on my own here, and having a place like this makes me like I'm not so alone.

Telling the exact strain is almost impossible ..but indicas are short fat leaves and sativas are long and thin..indicas are more couch lock and sativas more happy do stuff high..of course most strains are a mixture of both...happy growing ...and welcome..

nearly impossible to tell. you can look at a ton of different varieties and try to compare to get an idea but you will never know for sure. so i guess you get to have some fun and come up with a a name of your own! marijuana has 3 species, you should be able to tell if it is more indica or sativa. indicas grow shorter and bushy(growing more side branches). they also have shorter flowering time usually 6-8 weeks. sativas grow taller and and usually have less side branching. they have longer flowering time sometimes up to 12 weeks. keep in mind though, the height and side branching can easily be manipulated by topping, FIM, LST or other techniques used for more side branching and bigger yield. almost all strains though are an indica/sativa mix. the 3rd species is called ruderalis. by themselves they are not potent, and basically garbage. however they have a unique property to where they flower over time as opposed to when the light cycle is changed like it's sativa and indica cousins. because of this unique property, growers have crossbred ruderalis with indicas/sativas. the results was a very potent plant from the sativa/indica parent, and the autoflowering properties from the ruderalis parent.

since you dont know what you have, most would label them as bag seeds. probably a good idea to start out with because if you buy expensive seeds you may end up wasting them so it's a good way to learn the process and avoid costly mistakes. once you do learn the process, i would invest in a strain of your choice and either get feminized seeds or clones. that way you wont have to worry about males. bag seeds are not necessarily bad, it's just you dont exactly know what your growing. sure you can grow some really good stuff from bag seeds, but chances are it's from mexican commercial. now if you buy seeds from a seed bank or get clones, that strain was probably genetically engineered for it's high potency. it will almost always be better than a bag seed. good luck!
