It can be from under watering or over watering, if the cups are light when you pick them up obviously they need water. I would wait till the soil is dry then water. After a little while you will get the hang of it by the weight of the planters when you pick them up. And Sinsay is right make sure there are holes in the bottom! I put Hydrotron rocks in all my planters on the top and bottom. The bottome assures good drainage and they will get more oxegen in the roots that way, and on top so when you water your plants you don't disturb the topsoil and expose roots. JMHO Good luck with your first grow brotha! Hope they are all fat ass females!

Howard Stern, Hydrotron rocks is a great idea. I've been having problems with the topsoil being too disturbed when I water. The water leaves craters or holes. I try to pour uniformly around the plant but it can be hard to do when there are multiple plants in a small growing area. Do you think regular rocks that are about a half inch or inch in diameter would work?

Yeah I am sure they will work just make sure they are clean before adding them to your grow room. I would wash them under some really hot water. You should be fine with regular rocks bro! I can get a big ass bag of hydroton rocks for $30 at the hydro store so they aren't to expensive, but trust me I wash and reuse them! ;) GL brotha

I do this as well. I don't think there is an easier way to cover these issues
