Can you wire inline fans to timer and thermostat

My intake/extraction fans are used to keep temperature down, but I'd also like them to run for a few minutes every hour just to keep on top of any smells... Is it as simple as wiring the mains out of the thermostat and the timer to the power terminals on the fans in parallel?

It's not going to do anything crazy is it, or is there a better way to do this?

The short answer is "yes it will work", but it depends on your definition of the word "mains", and what is considered "acceptable wiring practice" in your country. For those of us living in the United States that have 120/240 volts split phase electrical service, generally intake/ extraction fans are powered by 120 volts, and only the "hot" wire (in electrician jargon that would mean the "ungrounded conductor") get switched by the thermostat and the timer running in parallel to the power terminal on the fan. The neutral wire runs continuous (uninterrupted) in the circuit to the neutral terminal on the fan.

Thanks for your help... There's only 240v AC here, so I assume all will be okay. I'll give it a go.

uh.. thermostats run millivolt... they generally run off a feed that comes from your heating/cooling system that feeds into a converter and then millivolt lines run to your thermostat.. thats a house heater... but most all are the same. but why not just get a temperature controller and plug it in .. set it to the temps you want it to turn on and do it that way instead of ripping stuff apart and rigging the wires.. C.A.P has good ones for like 50$

Thanks, but my thermostat IS a temperature controller, and it puts out mains voltage for the heating or cooling. It doesn't have a timer, and as I'm building the grow room now, there is no 'ripping apart and rigging the wires'.

But... thanks. Again.

I make upm-1 controllers.. Plug everything you need to come off or on into one cord, regardless of the amount of watts, and its controlled by one little cord plugged up to a plug in thermostat, cheap timer, anything that FRYS when used with more than 800w..
P.m. me if you need info/interested..they're discontinued from the manufacturer, but can still be built, and with heavier duty parts
....they changed my grow room circuit for the better...safeer too.
