Canada’s Leader Offers Antidrug Plan
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
OTTAWA, Oct. 4 — Reversing earlier moves to decriminalize marijuana use, Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada announced new legal and spending measures against drug use and distribution on Thursday.
In 2005, the government, then led by the Liberal Party, introduced legislation to eliminate criminal penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana. The bill did not pass Parliament before the election that brought Mr. Harper and the Conservatives to power. It was never reintroduced.
“Far too long now in Canada, governments have been sending out mixed messages on drugs,” Mr. Harper said Thursday. “Canadians hardly know what the law is anymore.”
To make it clear that drug use is illegal in Canada, he said the government would spend about $64 million on antidrug campaigns and increased enforcement, including mandatory sentences for dealers and smugglers. There will also be increased coordination with the United States, he said.

If Americans and Canadians can get their leaders to decriminalize pot then the rest of the world will follow suit.

Getting rid of george bush and the harper muppet seem to be the first step, only you guys have the power,i live on a tiny island that reflects American policy's and our country will not go against American policy's and trade agreements whoever we vote in as that would breach our alliance agreements.

In my country i would say that 7 out of 10 people smoke weed anyway,we are practicing civil disobedience to such a level that mostly the police have been given powers to just issue a warning or a caution for possession, lets hope that draconian American laws follow the rest of the worlds lead for once instead of the other way around:blsmoke:

the problem is a lot of older peeps in the republican party i mean voters would not allow legal pot. also goes for the dems too.

bush used weed and cocain, i bet his personal "real" veiw on pot is that it could and maybe should be legalized. but its political suicide if majority of your party or country doesnt want it legal.

a man that trys cocain several times is a very open minded man.

does anyone know if there are polls asking how many americans agrree that pot should be legalized? i would love to fine out what percentages we have

In TX 3 years ago the percentage that were for"medical marijuana" was 72% +/- 3%. Unfortunately unlike any of the states that have decriminilized Texas does not have a system in place for a voter referendum.

Damn I cannot wait until Bush is out of office. Vote Ron Paul! He is against the drug war.

It seems strange to me, that with all the trouble going on in the world right now, my country decides to focus its efforts on the war on drugs, while simultaneously wasting billions on a war on terror as well. Sometimes I wish that we weren't such a large nation. Remember Rome?

Ditto on Ron Paul!! The only vote that makes sence. Do you know why (the real reason) we have a "war" on drugs? ...a "war" on terror; a "war" on poverty; a "war" on crime; a "war" on etc, etc, etc? Check out the War Powers Act; it effectively removes your constitutional rights. Doesn't need to be a war on an evil axis country or a ruthless dick-tater wearing a funny hat. We need a revolution!!

I get to reep Ronald Regan's policy on Randon Drug Testing. I work for the DOT/FAA and have to really watch when I smoke. It's screwed up to think that the only time I get to smoke is when I know I have at least 10 days to clean out. Which doesn't come that often.

Sorry, not voting for Ron Paul or any other Republican.

8 years is plenty enough of the Republicans.

All of the Dems are for medical marijuana, and Bill Clinton has said he is for legalizing it.

Do some reading on Ron Paul, he's not your average Republican. And I don't think Bill Clinton is allowed to run.
