Canada's police chiefs want feds to remind people marijuana isn't legal yet

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Pot is not legal yet. That’s the message from Canada’s police chiefs, who say they have been dealing with too many people trying to jump the gun on the Trudeau government’s promise to legalize and regulate marijuana.

Clive Weighill, president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, tells Maclean’s on the Hill that there has been an increase in illegal marijuana dispensaries.

“Nanaimo shut down three dispensaries. Halifax has shut one down. Toronto has… we have, here in Saskatoon, as well. We want to stay ahead of this as much as we can. Certainly, I would say we are not anti-marijuana. But we do have laws here, and until we know what the new regulations are going to be, we have to enforce the laws as they currently stand.”

Weighill adds officers will arrest those who decide to sell weed too early.

“The charges would be trafficking because you’re trafficking in a substance that you’re not allowed to have… [also], maybe proceeds of crime… It’s a very serious offence, right now.”

The Association is calling on the feds to clarify for the public that marijuana is still illegal.

Uhmmm....no you fucking don't. They only need to act on complaints from the public...anything else is a waste of resources or a money grab or both.

He's having trouble giving up old habits I see. I mean why give up the fun of fucking decent Canadian's over. After all there nothin like bustin some dirty weed heads and then throwing back a few cold ones to celebrate.

i think they look at it as black and white-it might be legal one day but today it's not.
JT should put out some kind of statement or instructions to lay off or something.
it makes no sense that he promised to legalize but still prosecute for personal/medical

its obvious the public at large is interested in cannabis and have been in this country forever. removing the red tape does nothing to discredit the police, it only removes a sizeable margin of funding from their base. thus the dragging of their feet and the flapping of their gums.

this is going to end terribly for the police in general as they continue to push the agenda too far

Can we call the fed and remind them to tell the cops that they are public servants and the public has spoken about how we feel towards weed. Maybe the cops should be asking the feds "what the fuck is taking so long".

Cops are paid by the province or municipality. Charges are prosecuted with tax dollars from the province. If the municipalities decides their limited police resources don't allow for frivolous charges on pot smokers,and a province decides to quit funding prosecution for marijuana charges, it would force Ottawa to police and prosecute themselves...or get on with legalizing.

States in the US legalized so why can't Provinces? JT said he would consult them anyway so why not have 1 or 2 or more doing it themselves...Like regulating dispensaries
