Iam sure a read somewhere it was about two feet but don't quote me on it mines are 18" above and the plants are just over two feet in height 8weeks of flower and it's only the very bottom buds that feel a bit airy hope that helps m8

I've use Caligrowers chart for years and it works...well
locate the 600w light bulb down to 18 inches and you see you are far outta range
tape an 8 inch thread to your bulb, then lower the bulb so the thread is just on the top most leaf,
check temps after a few minutes you may need to increase airflow, at 8 inches previously,
you were getting 13000 lumens versus the 66000 lumens you are now,
the 600w is the best return for lumen to watt ever..!

I thought 8" would be to close to the plant with just a bare bulb not air cooled and that chart does that not show just for distance away what if the canopy is quite dense will it not lose out having to go through all of the leaves

That could very well be correct on the heat problem.
There is a very well respected member here who has used and suggests a method that involves a "layered" temp zone that has been very successful for him.
It consists of 90F at the canopy and 60's at the root level....Using that ideal, I would try getting it to a 90 deg canopy as your high limit. That distance would be his ideal spot...
While he runs a surround T5 set up, I don't see why it would not work with 600's.....I'll bet that is right in V's chart somewhere in the optimal zone!
