carb filter>cool tube>extraction fan set up, thoughts?

Hiya

Been thinking about how im gonna cool and control odour in a 1.5 x 3 x 5ft closet with a 250hps and came up with this...


I still cant find a definite answer, should cool air be blown into the ct, or should the hot air be sucked out...?

This config is pretty basic: passive inlet with a 100cfm PC fan:exraction fan pulls air 1)through carb filt then 2) through cool tube, thus hopefully cleaning air and taking the lamp heat away...

Hmmmm....does this seem ok or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

The only problem with this proposed setup is that the tiny air leaks in your system - between the carbon filter and the blower, may allow stinky air in.

I would pull air off the top of the cab (adding 1 elbow) - cool the light with it, and put the filter at the end of the run, even though you'll be pushing air into it. This will also quiet your fan BTW

If you're blower is powerful enough this shouldn't be a problem.

I have mine setup with the exhaust fan on the end then some 6 inch ducting attaching the inline fan to the cool tube. At the other end of the cool tube is some more 6 inch ducting and then the carbon filter on the end. It works great. I'll throw up a pic once the lights come on

Edit: If you have a powerful exhaust fan than I would just use a passive intake or else the CPU fan will just block air

cheers Tom, please do, would be interesting to see your set up...

so youre saying if the vent fan pulling the air out is much more powerful than the inlet fanpulling air in, dont bother with the PC fan?

Yup that is what I am saying. I have a six inch 306 CFM inline fan and a 4 inch passive intake. When the box is sealed you can feel the suction on the 4 inch hole, it is like a vacuum. I think you are going to need a stronger exhaust fan because 100 CFM just isn't going to cut it especially with a carbon filter on the end

Cheers m8. Looking at a 280m³/h inline fan (bloody Europeans eh?), thats 4.6m³/minute, grow cab 0.6x1x1.5m = 1m³, so air replaces 4.6 times a min, thats enough yeah?

Would a 85m³/h (so thats roughly a third third of the extraction fan) cpu fan improve things at the inlet end...? or just leave it passive?

Talking of passive inlets, gotta be lightproof i guess? some kinda S shaped gizmo (ducting,plumbing bends etc...)...?

Do you also know anything about washing machines?

I would stick with the passive intake. To make it lightproof you can use ducting or pvc elbows

So you got carb filter>ducting>cool tube>ducting>fan>OUT...?

Theoretically this works - in a perfect world - but every duct fitting has leaks, and I know my cool tubes aren't even air tight. I go: Intake (pulling hot air off the ceiling), cool tubes - carbon filter - fan, but my filter is an in line type.

I suppose if you use duct caulk, and tape every crack in the vent system it should be air tight, but maybe someone has a better idea.

Sorted! Yeah i was like wtf is going on in the corner, you gotta look pretty hard to see the venting going from fan to cool tube!

Not gonna be starting until Jan so plenty of time to test different set ups, dunno how ill test the odour control...i have got an old tin of this Fart Spray stuff and its fookin MINGING! lol maybe i can test the carbon filter with that sh1t!

Hi GC, any chance of a pic, i dont get what you mean by "intake (hot air off the ceiling)"...thought intake was cool air comin in the bottom?

Bah, am i only one who finds it hard to visualise these thigs?

When I put my face up to the exhaust I can't smell anything but the wood my box is made from. My ducting doesn't have any holes in it, it is pretty damn sturdy

I see in your pics you use those ezee rollers on your light. how do you rate these? i was eyeing them up but couldnt make my mind up as to if they were fiddly or weak.. had visions of it somehow going slack and dropping my reflector!

Nope I haven't had any problems hiroshima. You adjust the tension so that it will hold the reflector and then you can just easily slide the light up and down without any problems. Just make sure to get some S hooks to attach the reflector to the EZ rollers. I find them much easier to use than the daisy chain I was using before. As long as you make sure you adjust the tension to support the weight of the light you will be good to go. Good luck

You can see my vent system on the 1st page of my journal - in thumbnail pics

ah here it is pulling off the ceiling


Takes a turn into the tubes


Then through the DIY carbon cooler and pulled out by the S&P blower - has a muffler on the other end out of sight

I suggest putting the filter on top of your tent. Leaking is the reson. Those pipes get em all the time. I tries out diferetn ways and that was the best. Looks better inside. Lol. Also, if that is over a 200 cfm outake I would ditch the intake cpu fan. It is good to have both slight neg for smell but some active intake for the sake of the fans motor. A fans motor on true neg pressure would be dead. But as long as that hole is big enough.

Wow GC,just read your jounal, brilliant! Well thought out grow room, awesome strains, amazing photos and some cool info...just how we like our journals! That unkown Sativa looked yummy and the DJ Short BMS...man, not the cheapest beans but ahhhh....one day....

thanks for the vent pics...after reading your journal im gonna listen very, very closely to anything you say cos you seem to know your stuff!
