Carbon Filter/Air coolable light hood/6" inline fan

Ok here is the question. How about do I go hooking all this up when I get it. Do I use the fan to suck the air through it, or do I blow air through it? Also if I am not getting the carbon filter and 6 inline fan. Would the little can fans from HTGsupply be good enough to cool my light until I get the money for the nice fan and filter?
 
if you have only one exhaust opening, i would hook it up so the air goes through the filter, over the light, through the fan, and then outside the room...

most of the carbon filters are designed to have the air sucked into them...

you just want to be absolutely sure that you dont have any air leaks in the connections going to the light or fan... if any of the smelly air gets to the fan without going through the filter, then the filter is pointless.
 
Alright got it. One more ? If I don't have the money right now for the inline fan filter combo, will one of those inline duct fans from HTGsupply.com work for cooling the light till I can get the fan/filter combo?
 
i'm not sure... if you are talking about the same kind of "duct booster" fan that they sell at home depot, then i doubt it... those things suck ass... they say they move about 260cfm or some such bullshit, but if you hook a duct up to then, with no blockage air will come out as hard as if you were on the other end blowing on it... it doesnt push the air out... the air just "eeks" out... i would say, hold on to that $30 or so and put it into a centrifugal inline fan (vortex, or fantech type), you wont need the carbon filter for a few weeks when the start to actually smell...

did you buy one? im just looking to pull air out and use the DIY activated carbon filter, my box is only 2"x2"x3H

yeah, i bought a couple of them thinking they might work, i ended up throwing them out... they arent as strong as a good computer fan...
 
I was in your same predicament. I got the little cheap $25 fan from HTG and it sucked, so I took it back. The fan kept falling off the motor and it was incredibly weak. It was nowhere near the CFM rating that was on the box. Anyway I ended up getting the 4 inch inline fan, running a duct from the air conditioner vent to the light, then a duct from the light to the fan, and from the fan to a 4 inch flange sealed to a hole in the wall. That way the room stays cool, the fan and light stay cool, and I don't blow any of my CO2 (from the tank and regulator setup) out of the room. With CO2 you don't need a room exhaust as long as you can maintain a decent temperature. I will post pictures shortly. Anyway definitely a no on the duct booster and a yes on an inline fan. As for the carbon filter I would just get a second inline fan and a filter to make a scrubber setup with the CO2. In your case find a good exhaust port(or make one) and suck through the filter, into the light, out of the light, through the inline fan, and then into the wall or exhaust. Make sure you are feeding fresh air somehow, or just use CO2 like I do.

God this is gettin SUPER EXPENSIVE man. I haven't bought the fan from htg yet but was just wondering how it did? That answers the question so nevermind. I just want these 3 things and I will be set for a good while. 1. Grow tent, 2 6" inline fan, 3. Carbon filter. Deff will need the filter on my last grow with the cfls around two weeks from harvest just with two small auto ak47's the whole house smelt like I just got done smoking a FATTY everyday all day. I was SUPER parinoid about it especially when people start coming over and shit. I don't think the CO2 machine will be ANYWHERE in the near future shit I'm tryin to save some money by doing this lol.


But anyways next question. Will the light be ok if I don't air cool it until I can afford the fan and filter setup?
 
Your expenses will pay for themselves shortly. Be patient, and enjoy the process.

I used a light without a fan in an open room, with no direct outside ventilation (only into the rest of the house), and no CO2. The room was fine with my 400 watt MH, but with the 1000 watt HPS in there it got hot. Just keep a fan blowing air into the room, and one fan oscillating pointed at the light/plants. Low budget setup.
 
Only problem with that is the room in not ventilated with the rest of the house. (used to be the garage and its a storage room.) Right now with winter setting in down here I will be ok, but when summer hits I have to have the whole set going strong. Just with the cfls I was using in the room summer temps got to like 90 something with two fans blowing.
 
Awesome just what I need to hear. Here is the set up I have in mind Grow tent specs 39"x39"x79", 4"inline fan/filter setup. But that would mean I would have to go from the 4" filter/duct work then up to 6" through the light then back down to 4" into the fan and out of the tent. That just seems really bulky to me. I haven't seen the step ups or anything yet and sounds like a good idea I'm just thinking about how I'm going to do this when I go.
 
yeah, it sounds bulky but is not too bad... the transitions are only a couple bucks.

use 6" duct as much as you can, it will allow a lot more air to flow - put the transitions on the fan and carbon filter... putting them on both sides of the light and using 4" duct would work, but it will make the light about a foot longer ;-)
 
I think the best way to have it is:
Carbon Filter > Ducting > Fan > Ducting > Air cooled hood > Ducting to exhaust port
