Carbon filter fan 4 inch-most quiet ?

Hi all- I'm in the market for a 4 inch carbon filter fan. I'm looking at a couple brands but none of them say much about quiet operation. I know I can add a duct muffler to it but I'd rather not go to that expense, and my space as usual is very limited. I got a couple of weeks yet before my girls start stinking up the joint so I gotta start looking. I know its going to make a certain amount of noise but I dont want to trade the smell for the noise of an airport either. I'm looking at this one:

imo, it's not really the fan that makes the large amount of noise, it's the large amounts of air being moved about.. naturally the fan itself makes some noise, but like i said, i think most if it is simply from the air movement..

i know you said you didn't want a muffler for it, but i got a muffler and a fan speed controller, and in combination, i'd say the two cut the noise by a good 75% or so..

you can also make a box for the fan and line it with sound deadning material, like the stuff they use for recording studios, or even foam padding will work wonders..

check out the shhh, the neighbors can hear you thread, i just saw it as a sticky the other day, it has lots of great, useful tips and ideas in it imvho..

damn I hate when i see these threads. there is so much bullshit marketing when it comes to fan/filter combos.

upsize the filter for one..and use a speed controller to slow the fan down.

adding flexible duct to the exhaust will help quiet it substantially...even if it is only a foot or two of duct....and again, upsize the outlet duct directly to 6"

you can also wrap fiberglass duct wrap around the fan itself to help quiet it some.

are you saying to run a 6 inch filter with a 4 inch fan joe? i've never heard about doing so, but i have heard that the larger sized fans make a bit less noise, although i'm unsure how true it is being i've only run a 4 into 4 my entire career.

I had the 4" fan from amazon and it was louder than shit. It was off balance and hummed real loud.

I may have gotten a bad one though. I now have the 6" VenTech/filter combo and it's almost silent.

Thanks guys, I'd like to do it all at 6" but when I've seen them in person with the filter and all its just too gigantic. I'm gonna mount it to the ceiling and I'm gonna be ducking under it as it is...Meantime, I'm gonna check out some of these threads...thanx guys

...Oh and the speed controllers a definite.

yes sir exactly what i'm saying.

the fan filter combos they sell for such good prices on ebay and wherever are cheap for a reason. they aren't sized properly.

a 6" fan pushing 400 cfm cannot breathe properly through a 6" filter.....it's one of the reasons you need to slow it down.

Kinda the same principle of why you need to upsize intakes on a tent in comparison to outlet exhaust.

if you upsize your filter your fan will be quieter, work less hard, and your filter will last far longer and scrub more efficiently @ higher speeds.

edit: and I actually have 8" filters on some of my 4" fans

Some really good ideas out there to quiet down a filter fan but I still have the question is there one that straight out of the box quieter than some others?

if you want a super quiet fan..panasonic makes a whisperline that you absolutely cannot hear. http://www.panasonic.com/business/building-products/ventilation-systems/products/whisper-line.asp

you need to check dba levels. If it is not listed on the specs....it is not a quiet fan.

edit: the lower the dba the quieter if you didn't know
