Carbon Filter questions

I am building two 6x7x8 flowering rooms inside of an 1800 cubic foot room. I would like to buy one filter and put it in the large outer room. I don't want to exhaust that air anywhere, I just want the filter to scrub the air clean. Will this work? And how big of a filter will I need?


Edit- I would like to know if a 720cfm fan can cool 2 600 watt lights in a cool tube and pull air through a 375cfm carbon filter.

Yes, it will work. A 6 inch inline fan could vent each one of those rooms depending on the light. if you have 1000 hps lights then I suggest going to an 8 inch fan or larger. buy the carbon scrubber thats designed for the size ducting/fan you go with.

I'm running dual 600 watt cool tubes in each 6x7x8 room. I'm looking into the size of the fans to use for these. These are seperate and will be exhausted outside of the larger room into the attic. My main question is what size filter do I need to get to scrub the 1800 cf room. Is a 1800 cfm filter overkill or is it not enough? I found a 2200 cfm filter that is not too expensive for me, but how large of a fan do I need to stick on it. Fans get pretty expensive at flow rates half that.

On second thought I think it will be cheaper to run two carbon filters in the smaller rooms. So if I run 2 375 cfm filters and a 2 720 cfm fans to exhaust the rooms and scrub the air is this enough? The cfm of my rooms are 336. So it would look like this. Flowering Room->375 cfm Carbon filter->dual 600 watt cool tubes->720cfm fan->attic. Is this enough fan to cool the lights and pull through the filter?

Any response would be appreciated. I would like to order the setup tomorrow or thursday.

I would think that havin two fan drawing different volumes of air on one line is going to make one work harder than the other...I think....Your first plan seemed better....but definetely get the 2200 cfm/ you want to overshoot your necesities to insure all the air gets treated......also you say you woul like to exaust into the attic...as opposed to outside....I seems like you are planing a large grow.....you are going to be chucking gallon after gallon of water vapor into your home.... I would recomend venting it outdoors.

They would be two completely seperate systems. two of everything. two carbon filters, two cool tubes, two exhaust fans, two exhaust lines that are not connected. is a 720cfm fan enough to run a 375 cfm carbon filter and cool two 600 watt hps lights.

I think Klonerone is def right about using mismatched fans inline, the smaller fan will the restrict the larger to its cfm rating.

If you keep the cooltube setup sealed it will be easier to control the rest of the room IMO. You could use the filters as scrubbers and either vent the grow room or seal it and add co2/enviroment controls.

I've never done it myself but seems to be what most of the big boys are doin, hopefully someone with a similar setup will chime in here. Good luck.

I'm not sure where the idea I am using mismatched fans came from. I am using only 2 fans. 720cfm fans. I am also using 2 375 cfm carbon filters. The fans will pull air from the growroom into the cool tubes and out through an exhaust system. My question is whether a 720cfm fan is enough to pull air through the carbon filter and cool off 2 600 watt lights.

Is anyone here able to tell me if this fan size will work? I would really like to order my equipment so that I can build out my rooms. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah sorry dude i totally misread.

Flowering Room->375 cfm Carbon filter->dual 600 watt cool tubes->720cfm fan->attic 'might' work, not sure. Its probably the cheapest, easiest way.

One concern would be that the fan will draw the air too quickly through the much lower cfm fan, not removing enough smell, which can happen. you typically want the filter cfm to be = or greater than the fan. Some guys buy larger filters just to be safe. Unless you have alot of twists an turns in your exhaust or a cheap speed controller to lower the cfm of the fan it will certainly pull too fast.

That being said 375cfm should be enough to exchange air but i can't say it would be enough to cool the lights, so i guess i would get a 800 cfm filter to be safe. The 720cfm fan would probably work depending on your intake temps. I would go ahead and order it with a = or greater than cfm filter, worst case scenario you have to use the fan solely to cool the lights and buy smaller fan to use with the filter as a scrubber.

Thanks Stone! I will order bigger filters for the fans. That is exactly what I was looking for. Time to throw down a couple grand tomorrow.

I got a 6" inline, 405CFM, Hydrofarm, cooling 2 600 watt hoods. Keeps temps in check, but my intake air is only 58 F. I do have 3 90 degree elbows in the line, which I don't recommend doing, you lose serious airflow everytime you have a bend. Something I need to change out after this harvest. Definitely vent outside as well, either that, run a dehumidifier in your attic. My room is sealed and 5 plants with temps around 78-80 are transpiring almost two gallons of water a day, or at least that is what is coming out of my dehumidifier. You don't want that moisture in your house!

Just a suggestion..... Ever thought of dealing with these two seperatetly. Take one of your fans and dedicate it strictly to pull your heat off your lights. Take your other fan and use it for odor control. I dealt with these two issues seperately and it worked great! Hope this helps.

Your fans are good but your filter size is too small....the filter should have the same or higher rating of the fan.

This would be great, but are you suggesting that I run a Y exhaust from both carbon filters into one fan that exhausts outside? As well as a Y from the 2 dual 600 watt lamps into another fan? I don't know if a 720cfm fan with a Y can cool down 4 600 watt lamps.
