Yes you can smoke it and its really not that bad. You dont get a buzz like weed but it has a slight sedative effect. It would probably make a good substitute for someone trying to quit tobacco. Personally i really like the smell of catnip, it kinda reminds me of a weed smell, mainly because its just a really pungent plant.

I recently saw this video on youtube. It's in german, so I have no idea what the narrator is saying, but it's video of kitties chewing on live catnip and totally flipping out.

I think I'm going to start growing this for my critters. I want my critters to be this happy!

Perhaps the flowering is triggered by light, temperature, or seasonal changes. I'll try to investigate sometime & find out FDD.

Mine usually flowers in august. I have it planted in the ground behind my shed. I also have rogue plants here and there.

Cat nip will grow some really nice looking buds on it. Once it flowers the plant starts to die off and it gets kind of ugly looking (that's why it's behind the shed).

You can harvest it and dry it like you would weed to save for your cats in the winter time. I've never tried jar curing or anything though) Mine prefer it fresh than dried, but in the winter they have to take what they can get.

If you plant it in the ground it will grow back every year off the same plant. Not sure about pots, cold winters where I live kill off potted periennals so the ground is the best place to grow them for me. Sometimes if we get a couple of warm days it'll push out some new growth in the middle of winter. I always go pick it for the kitties to enjoy.

I've also heard of people smoking catnip but I've never tried it myself. Catnip is a good mosquito repellent. We rub the fresh stuff on us and put a sprig in our pocket when we're out after dark, helps keep us from being bit.

Hey FDD I still haven't taken the time to research exactly what it is that causes catnip to flower, but I have an interesting development to show you. I have been growing a catnip plant indoors under 24 hours of fluoresent lighting & get this it started flowering after only a few weeks in a peat cup...I was shocked. It's not even a foot tall, barely has any leaves, but I had to get a picture of it for you to see.

whoah, you got it. must need looooooooooooong days to flower. i was focused on dark hours, maybe it's triggered by light hours. thank you.

You can buy it at walmart. Wait until January when they put the seeds out in the lawn and garden area, then go buy them. They're like a dollar for a packet.
