cfl help - seedling stage

hi - its a week tomorrow since my seedlings have been under the lights.
so far i have been using 2 x 16w 3400k florescent kitchen tubes.

wanted to move the seedlings out of the kitchen and into the tent, but obviously my 400hps is going to be to hot for the little babies. i was wondering if a 200w cfl that plugs straight into the reflector would be too powerful ( if a few inches away from plant ) or would be overkill as i was planing to use the 400w hps to veg/flower.

thanks

you can definately use the 200w clf for vegging some i dont know how long u plan on vegging for but yeah keep it a few inches away with a fan so that the light doesnt burn ur babies then you can switch to the hps in a few weeks when it is bigger and stronger.

the 200 cfl would not be to much for them as is the temps are right and you keep the light far enough away from the seedling i wold veg it for the first few weeks then hit it with the hps cfl put off very little heat if the air around it is circulating use your hand if its uncomfortable to your hand then it is for the plant

thanks guys - will pick up a 200w cfl with reflector tomorrow ( £60!! ).
forgot to mention that it will be used in a 1x1x2m tent.
would 125w/150w be sufficient instead of a 200w ??

Smaller cfls are more efficient and cost less per watt, in the US anyway.

cheers guys - will go for the 200w
illegal smoker - yep your probably right about the smaller ones being cheaper, my pal uses smaller ones (but around 4 at a time) but i think i would prefer one bulb ( saying that until the electricity bill comes in!! ).

What spectrum is needed ?? 6500k (daylight), 5000k (full), 4100k (cool white) or lower ??

edit - reading through this great site it would appear that 6400k is the one im after - could someone confirm please - thanks

thanks guys - will use for veg only.

would 250w be complete overkill ?? as i can get a 250w for the same price as a 200w.

one guy at a grow shop once told me that they stopped stocking the 200w envirolite as he believed the 250w contained a better gas ......does anyone have any info on this ?? or is it pure myth ??

well if they are the same price then i would go with the 250w i dont know about the gas thing but more wattage= better light penetration so whatever
