CFL vs HPS...

I hear HPS is like super hot compared to CFLs, but it produces buds alot better than a CFL could because of its crazy lumens. I remember seeing a small Scrog setup with this 250 watt hps air cooled in there and it was closer than any hps setup I see. Im limited on space really, my space is about 6 1/2 feet high and 2 feet wide, just imagine a speaker :P I was wondering if there was a way to cool these HPS lights down to a good degree so my room wouldnt cause my death to my plants or if I should stick with the good ol CFLs. Alot of people air cool the HPS, but is there a way to cool it by further means? Like with computers they have the normal fans and then they have liquid cooling which helps far more.

air cooled with 6'6" in height you will be fine, just have one duct coming into the lamp and one coming out with a 4in. inline duct fan and most of your heat doesn't enter your box, get a fan or two in there and nothing to worry about. Don't waste your time or money on cfl's (nothing wrong with using cfl's if that's all you can afford or all your space can handle) if you have the oportunity to use hid's.

Ah thanks man, that helps alot cause heat is the number one thing im worried about. Still wondering how im going to fit the carb scrubber in there with all that in there :mrgreen:

if you can put the carb scrubber on the outside, either the top or the back. If it needs to be stealth put a box or something over it with one end open or a nice big hole cut out. You shouldn't need a huge one for a space that size you you may be able to just attach it right to the top of your space with the light under it you will probably lose about 1'6" doing it this way but that's not too bad. If you can afford it I would suggest a cooltube, they seem to take up less space then most other fixtures, which would be ideal for your situation.

My 400W HPS (air cooled) keeps my closet cooler than my CFLs did... Significantly cooler. I can actually keep it closed now. I used to have to leave it open all the time.

You will still benefit vegging under your cfl's. I am growing under a 250w hps and it really sucks for vegging under. My plants are really small for being about 4 weeks old. Next time i will vegg under my cfls again. The first grow i did was under cfls and i vegged them for 3 weeks and they was beautiful.

thats why you buy two bulbs.toss out all CFLs I find'em to be a wast of time in the long run.
MH-blue spectrum awesome for vegg, not so good for flowering.
HPS-red spectrum great for flowering, not so good for vegg cycle.
You can use both MH/HPS in the flowering cycle and vegg you will find the yield larger. :joint:

LOL Like a 30w clf has 2000 Lumen intensity (so it cant penetrate the bud deep enough thats why you get reli small buds)
125w Envirolite cfl 12000 Lumen intensity (Envirolites can penetrate bud ok still not great but still with more light it will)
a 400w hps has around 55000 Lumen intensity (hps will penetrate bud great up to 10 ft away)

So i think we all know who wins lol HPS
but theres no way a High Pressure Sodium is cooler than a cfl NO
who ever says that is insane .COME on a 70w hps is hot as fuck lol .
put a hps and a cfl bulb next to a plant it will be the hps which will burn it i bet ya lol

i guess it all comes down to what you prefer.... i like the cfl because i can put them closer to the plant all the time with out the worry of burning the leaves, so i make up for some of the lumen loss with closer distance.
i hear 50,000lumens for hps.
with my set up ive got 30,000lumens with 4 bulbs, with 2 125watt 10,500 lumens bulbs on the way.theres my 50,000lumens right there hanging inches away from the ladies...

this is just my prefrence..
it was easier for me to go with the cfl, not just for cost. i save so much by not having to by all the accessories to keep the room hella cool from the hps temp.
it much more discrete.

if i had the money and the area with fan and ducting, i would go with 2 600watt hps, that should be more than enough.

Nah not 50000 it all depends on the bulb you get the one i get is 55000
i use cfls for VEGGING only saves me alot of cash
And no you but have 30,000 lumens as lumens dont add up like that .
still 12000, but with a bigger cover x 3 yh

This is a great point that does not get brought up enough. You don't add lumens when you get more bulbs. If the highest lumen bulb you have is 3000 then you have 3000 lumens on your ladies even if you have 10 3000 lumen bulbs. That's not to say that extra bulbs doesn't help, it certainly does, but you cannot equal a 55k lumen bulb simply by going out and putting 55 1000 lumen cfl's around the plants.

Plants will only intake some much light maybe 6 hrs worth, the rest gets reflected. having 10/1000 watt HPS over one plant the yeild wont be any different, then if you only used 1/1000 watt bulb.
If heat is an issue, then and only then should CFLs be used.(and $)
full spectrem lumens can not be over looked, not just how much lumens per sq foot.

even 1 1000 watt bulb is too much for one plant,, it ends up being a waste of electricity... out side there is aprox 15000 lumens per square foot,, and outdoor plants grow huge... i veg with cfls and flower with HPS and here is my first ever indoor harvest... i only use 70 watts HPS for one plant.. this time around i am doing a ScroG to increase yield

check it out.. my first indoor harvest with 45 watts cfl for veg and 70 watts hps for flow.. thats minus four branches as well (dont ask)

thanks guys for the info. had a thought thered be a talk about the lumens and such in this thread. As for these MH lights, are they all blue spectrum and all meant for flowering? I have mostly info on HPS and CFL lights, heard bout these MH ones a few times, but never looked into em

the blue spectrum resembles spring - early summer sun... which is when a plant is typically vegging... so it is said that the spectrum in MH is better for veg,, and the orangeyness of the HPS resembles late summer- fall sun, when a plant is flowering,, thus it is said that HPS is better for flowering.. there are a lot of people who bought a MH and use it all the way through and will argue it produces better results to the death,, but i think its just because they already spent the money on a MH and they dont want to put out for a HPS
