Your going to want some gap when your plants are babies, as the other's said a couple of inches should suffice. When it gets bigger, after about four weeks, you can have the cfl bulbs nigh on touch the plant as they kick out so little heat.

thanks guys im new to this growing stuffkiss-ass but also i have 3 26w =100w replacement bulb about a foot away so im gonna put them closer n hope to see better results ......ive noticed its been streching towards the light n i kinda want to keep it as small as possible thanks for the advice

Put it right above the plant without touching it. You want to get as much light to it as possible in order for it to sprout out and "reach" for the light. The stronger/brighter, the better.
