So your answer to the question is to raise the light, and not to dim. Thanks for your long rounded and contradictory way of agreeing. It's really not a matter of argument. Like Rahz says, you can simply measure which height is "optimal".
My example about the car speeding is spot on. You can come up with a lot of vague assumptions of things that might be slightly different with no real explanation of what the effect would then be. Why bother when you can simply measure what light the plants get both on top and below the canopy.
Malocan and I both measured a 20% loss in a standard tent by going from 12" to 24". It's that simple.
You can also easily measure below the canopy. Do a diagonal line across the plants. There might be some difference there since some people have a more open canopy than others. Either way, with more light you will see more light down there too. I sure did at least.
I'm using a 300watt Mars hydro in a 3x4 I'm unable to turn it up past 40% even at almost 30inches. I thought maybe it was the strain but I've had the same problem with multiple strains. Is my light to powerful because I feel like if I'm unable to have the meter reading the recommended ppfd at the top of the plant without them being burnt the next day then I'm not going to get the full potential of the plant. I have friends with more powerful lights and are able to max em out, frustrating as hell, almost makes me want to go back to HID I never had that problem with HPS or even T5, please helpI fall in the other camp. Here is a quote from a different thread, and sums up why I choose to raise rather than dim.
I get faster growth, and hardier growth even though the peak PPFD are equal.
Both ways grow just fine. And variables will influence the better choice per situation.
You need to heat that space and make sure they transpire well, all pointy leafs.
