Changing from Metal Halide to HPS

Im currently using a 250 Metal Halide for my vegetative grow. Im planning on changing it to a 250 HPS bulb for flowering. Can i just change the bulbs without changing anything else? Iv checked my balast and it says Metal Halide/HPS compatable so i dont see a problem. Just wanted to double check.

Also roughly how close should i have my metal halide to my plant during vegetative state?

Thanks

If the ballast is set up for both then you are good to go. Luck
Cheers mate. Any idea on the distance from my plant for my halide light? Iv read 12" - 48" depending on the wattage. Iv also read you should check for excessive heat at the top of your plants by placing your hand (palm down) over your plants. If the top of your hand is hot, you need to move your lamp up higher. Id like a second opinion on this?

The height of your light depends on wattage and air flow. If you use a fan - you can lower your light a little. Putting your hand at the top of your plant will tell you if it is too hot, but I use a little digital thermometer hung on a string from the light to the top of the plant. They only cost about 5 bucks and are found at any home improvement place like Home Depot. They have a battery that lasts about a year and the ones I use also measure humidity.

I am just using a household fan and got my thermometer taped to the inside of my pot. Got it at a regular 80f. Its my first ever grow so im a bit clueless. Trying to read up on as much as i can.

put it in the middle. cold air sinks, hot rises. fans blowing on therms and such give false readings. i'm going to have an ac hitting the bottom of my reflectors
and tops of the plants
