@6ohMax, bubble hash or ice water extract has been around for at least twenty years and hashish itself for much longer than that.
Bubble hash is a lot like making coffee to simplify it. Of course people have different methods or techniques which they use but the simple version is this: fill a nylon sock with anything covered in trichromes (most people just use their sugar leaf trim) and dunk it in a bucket filled mostly with ice and a little bit of water.
Stir contents for anywhere from 3-20 minutes after which the water will look like those old school apple caramel lollipops if you know what I'm taking about.
After agitating, remove the nylon sock and strain remaining water through a mesh material. Cheese cloth works well but they make "bubble bags" which make the job easier.
End of rant on IWE, it's commonly referred to as "solventless" because that's what it is, purely marijuana without any additional chemicals to create the concentrated material.
I have less knowledge on "shatter" or BHO aka butane hash oil or butane honey oil but I'll give you a quick rundown.
If I understand correctly butane is run through the trim or chosen material and as the butane does so, it grabs the trichromes on it's way.
The butane is then purged out by vacuum oven (hopefully, some backyard cooks still use a warming tray to slowly bubble the butane out, obviously the vacuum oven is a much healthier and pure alternative).
What you have left is concentrated pot, with a little residual butane left in it. No matter what anyone tells you, they can't get ALL the butane out of the hash material.
Butane is not deadly in small quantities, it's even used as a propellant in many cooking sprays, but the fact remains. You will be smoking some butane along with your bud.
BHO is usually more potent but never purchase from anywhere but a reputable dispensary as the side effects of poorly purged "shatter" can be nasty. I've gone through a few migraines and upset stomachs myself.
The word shatter comes from the idea that the hash is so concentrated and hard that it will shatter when touched.
I've only seen true shatter once in my life, most of it just melts or cracks.
End of story, I prefer some good old bubble hash in my lungs and on my palette.
Hope that answered your question.
