There’s a 2 strip 330 watt version and a 3 strip 330 watt version. I got the 2 strip version, I was told I could upgrade and add a 3 strip layer of I needed it
 
The title suggests you are using an X3 though.

It's odd just leaving oput a strip though. The spacing should be different if there are 2 or 3 strips and just leaving out the middle one wouldn't give you the correct spacing for 2 strips with too much light on the walls. Or vice versa, simply adding a strip in the middle of 2 correctly spaced strips would also give you uneven lighting in the middle.

The strips should be 12 inch spaced (middle to middle) for 2 strips and 8"apart with 3 strips.

I went back to double check it’s listed under the X3 but with the two bar it’s an X2. Your thoughts about the spacing make sense, I just followed the instructions and mounted them where they are supposed to go.

Nah, having them closer to the walls like that is perfect. You're not getting a hot-spot down the center now and you should see very even spread that way.
A 3rd bar isn't necessary if you ask me. Just know, you have ZERO WARRANTY with the DIY kit so be sure you're very careful and diligent with construction.

That's a often accepted misconception yes. Still a misconception though.

You ARE losing more light on the walls with the lights closer to the walls. So you are giving the plants less light overall. That's a given.

When you have good distribution you don't have a hot spot with properly spaced out light sources either. Not one that matters anyway. So there is no point in losing the light for "better" distribution since the light was already distributed adequately.

That's the bit people fail to understand though. It does'n have to be 100% the same intensity everywhere. 80% of the average intensity as minimum is the accepted rule of thumb . It's just not worth it to make it "better"beyond that. Professional growers don't

Only when you try to utterly max out the light intensity would it make sense to waste more light on the walls to get that little bit of extra light to the sides. When growing at "normal" intensities it's wasteful to do this.

Yes it looks like there are three slots and you would correctly use the two outer ones for the X2 configuration.
 
i’m not getting any more chilled lights. for the prices they charge they need to add all the features their competitors brands offer.
