Back in the very late sixties - in Basic Training - Fort Ord , california.

They had concrete box like that with small (maybe a foot) wide to kick the grenade into if you dropped.

I saw a guy drop one and he about freaked out as he had to kick it in the hole or he would get it.

We stood behind a concrete wall. This one idiot drill sergeant would yank people out from behind the wall to scare them and show them a grenade exploding.

He was a jerk, so we about died laughing when the drill sergeant got nicked in the neck with some shrapnel, yes he was bleeding pretty good.

my dad was drafted (a so-cal boy from the 40's) in the 60's and said he pulled that pin and threw that SOB as far as he could. LOL.
