Choosing which plants to keep.??

As I some to the end of my first grow, my second grow has already started . My starting cabinet is about 2'x4' and currently only has 2, 3ft T5s. Up until yesterday I had 16 plants in there varying from 8" or so to 12" with more than half having already been topped once. I had hoped to use the Uncle Ben topping method but most did not have parallel leaves at the node 2 point so I just chose a spot. In any case, my starting cabinet is enclosed in my flower room. (See: https://www.rollitup.org/t/thoughts-on-room.836894/ ) so I am a bit limited and needed to cut back the 16 to something less, but had a hard time choosing...so it had me wondering what others look for when having to make "who lives and who dies" clone descisions... Thick main stem? Bushiness? Roots? (hard to tell now of course but my second group of 8 started with a much better root base coming out of their party cups) or is there something else.?

I decide while my clones are still rooting in the aerocloner, and my decision is made by root mass and root colour almost exclusively.

When I'm deciding on which vegging plants to get rid of, generally it's the strength of the main stem, how tight the internodes are, and the general look and feel of the health of the plant and leaves.

When I cull it's typically the slow rooting one's in the cloner or cups (seeds). What I do now is any rooted/growing clones go into a party cup, then into 1 Gal fabric pots after about 2 weeks. The one's that thrive and take off are the winners, if I don't have the space or they're noticeably slow to grow they get culled. The 1 gal pots I find easy to manage as they're not too big but big enough to get them going well, if they don't keep up they come out easily enough and not a lot of waste/work with 1 gal pots.

When I cull ...
.
Just had to say something about the fact that you have more "likes" than you do "messages" after almost 1400 posts. I have been happy with the fact that I have about 50% the number of likes as I do messages. I think that is a sign that you "thrive" as a "winner". You probably also have good roots, and a thick stem. ;)
I added to your pile, thanks.

Unfortunately, 'likes' isn't a really good way of judging quality of a poster anymore... some of us lost nearly all of them when they changed the site over :(

However, it doesn't take long here to realize who posts quality info, and who treats people with respect and courtesy.

Thanks, as spek mentioned it's not always an indicator, although my posts/likes didn't get mangled in that last major upgrade, i hear a lot them did. I just post from experience, otherwise I read/learn/watch and treat everyone with respect. There's no "my way or the highway" in my books, it's just whatever works for you. I do a lot of experimenting, observation, and log everything I do so I can go back and repeat the good stuff, if I didn't log it or take a pic, it didn't happen - lol Specially when smoking this stuff ;) Cheers

yeah it was as if you just signed up for the site. what I hated the most was the fact that you couldn't even "like" post that you "liked"
