Clones don't taste or smell like mom did

I grew out some glueberry seeds a while back and chose the best of the bunch to keep as a mom. Unfortunately I tried to keep her in too small of a container and wound up with all sorts of issues which only ever worked themselves out after I finally moved her to a larger container. I got her happy and healthy again! Yay, right? Wrong. Every clone that I've grown out is a faint shadow of what mom originally was. Essentially the berry smell and flavor are gone. All that remains is a light lemon flavor, no hint of berry. Last grow I flowered out mom as a final farewell and for the first half of flower, she had the berry smell, which eventually disappeared a couple weeks before harvest.

Anyone else ever have this happen?

You can definitely damage genetics with care issues , pests, or pathogens. There is various ideas out there about ways to rejuvenate them, but once the damage is done I think it’s easier to move on.

Depending on how severely you stressed the plant, it could have the potential to do genetic level damage. That could have affected the mother.

There's also the possibility that the siblings of your mother plant had a couple of traits that weren't shared with their sister. Kind of like a one-off.

She was pretty unhappy. I was chasing a deficiency that I just couldn't tame. I wanted to keep her small so kept her in a 5" square container from clone to about 15" tall and i wound up giving her way too much. Severe burn. Really dumb mistake... I knew better and did it anyway. Potting up made a world of difference giving me a root zone that I could better control. She bounced back quickly, but like I said, that berry flavor was gone.
