I worked for the USFS for years doing this kind of work. Rooted cuttings are possible but most of the time they are grafts of trees. You take root stock from between 1 and 3 years depending on the diameter of the cutting and cut the top off, then take your cutting match it and tape it together. About 90% take and are put into tree improvement programs. This usually takes place in a nursery setting. Come back tomorrow I will find a bunch of photos from when the graft goes wrong, some weird shit happens.
