Cloning and picking mothers in early veg

I've bought a 4x4, wanting to do a 1 plant per sq foot and try to aim for a 1lb harvest or more.

Question 1 : Is it possible to find good mothers that will yield very well in early veg, currently have 9 seedlings (From seed). Within the next 3-4 weeks I'm going to use the fastest growing plant and take clones to have a plant per square foot (Maybe, still unsure). Will that specific plant be the highest yielder, if it's the fastest grower?

Question 2 : Unless it's just a case of trial and error. I'll have to grow them out in flower to find out which yields the most... And take clones beforehand while still in veg..?

Question 3 : I'm still unsure on which growing methods I'll be using, and lighting setup. If anyone can offer advice I'd be more than appreciative. Looking mainly for yield.

Question 4 : Should I Scrog, SoG or grow them traditionally, possibly grow vertically? Does it really matter?

Question 5 : I'll be growing using coco in smart pots, is there any other medium that could potentially increase yield?

This is slightly controversial.

DJ Short says the most important thing for him is that it needs to pass the smoke test before he'll select a plant. Have a look from 11:00 in this vid (the whole vid is worth watching if you want to know more about how breeders select their plants):


Just a suggestion... take clones from all the potential best plants in veg. Pot up the one or two you think are going to be your mothers. Then pot up the others in small cups/pots and keep them going next to the "mums" until you've flowered the whole crop out. That way if you find one of the plants you selected as a mum was actually worse than one of the others you can swap them out later without an issue.

Thanks, I'll definitely do that. Can you stop a mother from growing quickly? Just use CFL's to keep her alive etc - I always thought that may be possible, don't ask me why lol
