closet ventilation

DS1983 has a good idea, it's what I came up with on my first thought, on second thought, move to a friendlier location. If your going to take the time, money, and the risk; you might as well do it right.

Removing the light socket and venting from there is a poor idea. At best, you will accomplish mediocre ventilation with the added bonus of creating the perfect environment for mould to grow and destroy the drywall on the ceiling while simultaneously creating a health hazard for both you and your plants.
:peace:

Totally agree with that. Removeing molding/baseboards to vent it in there is the same thing. Buying a new door that fits and modifying it for your vents while saveing the orignal un-harmed door for when you move out has got to be the best suggestion i have herd here so far.

if theirs a window open it, shut the blinds, cover the window with cardboard and duct tape so its air tight and light proof, cut a 6 inch round hole in the top corner of the cardboard on the same side as the open window, insert a 6 to 12 inch long section of 6 inch flex hose and attach your filter then your blower fan and ta-da!! if you have a window which you probably dont im guessing!!

i grow in an apartment and i drilled holes in my walls. just fix it b4 u leave. its very easy 2 do. they even have tutorials on youtube on how to drywall. piece of cake. i also got new doors put on my closet and drilled a hole in that for intake. try finding some old doors and u wont be subject to small claims court. and please make sure that the maintenance will never have to go near ur grow room. my closet is in a room with no bathroom or heaters or anything. i agree its risky growing in an apartment but its risky growing anywhere seeing as marijuana is illegal.

Go buy a door from your local home improvement store that fits the closet doorway. Feel free to demolish that one. Just put the stock door back in before you leave the place for good. If you want to be a little more risky about it and your closet for whatever reason has moulding at the floor, you could try removing a strip of moulding and making a slot where it would normally cover.

I second the light fixture removal if you can do it without destroying the electrical box behind it.

I've been toying with this idea myself for my closet in an apt. I'm thinking of a cheap door and 2 quiet bathroom fans; the intake up higher to cool the lights and the exhaust down low, and a small box fan to better circulate air inside. I would duct the exhaust to some kind of "stench chamber" to try to control the odor somehow (some kind of box with a lot of dryer sheets and purfumey crap). It's a pretty big project for a diy dope like me so i don't know if i'll actually do all that but this thread got me excited. I will be getting the closet setup over the next couple weeks or so but dont be surprised if my pics show a plain ol' door...

You will be fighting the natural convective flow of heated air. Hot air wants to rise and cool air wants to sink.

While you may think you want or need to cool your light what you really want is to keep heat away from your plants so if you take in air up high and exhaust low you are drawing the hot air through your plants, and again fighting the natural convective flow of heated air.

Make your intake low so it will draw cool fresh air in and with the exhaust up high it will draw that cool fresh air up through your plants as it sucks out the heated air that naturally wants to rise and that will keep more heat away from/off of your plants.

For that fact if one fan will move enough air all you will need is one exhaust fan up high and enough air intake space for fresh air to be sucked in as the heated air is blown out. Just check to see how many CFM the fan is and then figure your space and if one will do it why run two?

Good point. This is the kind of insight a dummy like me needs. Indoor growing is new to me and controlling the environment is scary. I'd like to butcher it as little as possible on the first attempt...

When you get into the real fine detailed bits about growing, especially in some systems, there is a tremendous amount to learn and most things you cannot just hunker down and ponder on it a while (a Southern colloquialism) and come up with the answer and will have to ask people at a site like this or purchase a good well written highly informative book or do a bunch of online research to find the answers but for the most basic things it you just look at what you have to work with and then sit back and think about it from any angle that comes to your mind most times you will come up with something workable.

In the finer details and in some systems of growing it does take some effort to learn but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist for the basics. You just have to go slow and think things through instead of rushing in and going with the first thing that comes to mind.

When you get a thought take a few minutes to see if you can come up with some reason why it might not be bad or try to think up another way to do it and then compare and see if one is better than the other and maybe looking at the two of them will spark something and a third way will come to mind and it will be the ticket.

You will be surprised what you can come up with if you use both your gray matter and your white matter together. Myself I also like to use both sides of my brain but that’s just me.

But never be shy to ask any question. The only dumb question is the one that is not asked.
