Coco Growers Unite!

If you use the blocks meant for reptile bedding, or some such,
then be sure to rinse it well. I think that it has salts on it that
will harm your plants. You want to charge it with Cal Mag,
as indicated, afterwards.

I forgot this and had to flush a plant. It survived. They like Coir really. :0)

Perlite isn't necessary but it doesn't hurt either..one of the benefits of coco is that you can't really over water. I would recommend fabric pots though.

Aqua flakes makes a line specifically for coco, has more calmag in it. It's good shit. Super simple and grows fat buds
I've also used Jacks classic which is much cheaper and does a real good job. You just have to supplement with calmag or epsom salts.

Thanks for the advice! I think I am going to go with cocotek from GenHydro. I'll mix it with perlite. I'm not sure how much I want yet. Thinking 25-50%. The smart pots sound good, considering my space I'm going to go with 3 gallons. Aqua flakes sounds good but is there an organic liquid nutrient good for coco?

I have used mother earth tea as a base a few times and it works, just not as good as the 1, 2, 3 part synthetics (to me anyway).

I have never tested perlite and coco but I have tested coco and hydroton pebbles vs just straight up coco. The plants mixed with the pebbles did not grow as well as the 100% coco mix. I will never mix again, the ratio always jacked with my feedings. The 2 mediums seemed to throw each other off and cause nothing but headache. I stay strictly 100% coco now (sans wool cube).
 
what do u guys think of amending coco w/ gypsum, dolomite lime, and maybe kelp, and crab meal?(just cause I have it around) ill be watering in 3 gal smart pots with dyna gro foliage pro and protect all the way through.

im still having issues with my 1st 2 coco plants. the bigger 1 is still getting tiny rust spots in random places but my lil 1 is that bad im considering pullin her.. upto 15ml per gal of calmag dunno if gettin some epsom salts will help will post pic shortly

I tried a foliar feed of epsom salts, but this did not seem
to help the problem.

I am going to add more cal-mag and top dress with EWC.

I'm a long time hydro grower (even actual edible veggies & shit)....but WOW, lovin coco
...rot had me almost giving up on this hobby; xfered my plants over to coco, followed the advise here, and life couldn't be easier....

I've noticed the growth is only slightly slower, but the simplicity is 3X easier: no pH to f*ck with, no worry about nutes in the res, no rot, no temp issues, none of that crap
 
I used to use the canna coco in the bag and love the shit, but recently I switched to the brick and I got to say I'm really liking this to. I use %100 coco and I don't "charge" my coco (not telling anyone else they shouldn't) just do a good flush wit tap water tell the brown stuff runs clear then hit it with some nutrients and my plants seem to love it. Been using coco for a while now and can't imagine using nothing else

I use the bricks too but i soak mine in a ph'd calmag solution overnight then rinse it through with plain water and its ready to use. Add clone and nutes and off you go :)
 
In what order would you put these nutes in you water to mix
Rhizotonick, cal max, canna A and B, and over drive

yeah, if you are otherwise uninformed like I was, then read all the sh+t posted by ignoramuses on the net, you tend to get a lil paranoid .....

I started to buy the pre-made stuff at a slight premium $$$ but went ahead and got the cheaper GH 5Kg brick (CocoTek? I dunno) ...did a few plants in str8 coco and a few others in various ratio mixes with perlite....

just my "new-at-this" small-sample-sized- opinion but:
a) I don't think you gotta do much with the more well known commercial brands of coco beyond a fresh water flush or maybe a pre-soak in Cal-mag (I did some of both, noticed no lock-out or issues in either "test subjects")

b) I'm pretty sure now mixing in perlite isn't a absolute mandate, BUT since I got my plants on automatic drippers, it appears those with a 70/30 coco-perlite mix are 100% immune to over watering wilt (obviously)...the trade-off being: the perlite mix plants have more waste/runoff (again; obviously)

c) I'm experimenting to see if Coco specific nutes even matter: looks like it does (tentatively speaking)
 
i have never spent the extra money on loose coco only because i am cheap. Don't know if it is worth the extra $$ but i usually either use cocotek or cocogro and they both produce bud that is fine for myself and never ceases to get a compliment when i share.

oh and i usually get my coco put some in a smart pot still compressed(whichever size i am using) dump some perlite then i dunk it in a 5 gallon bucket i fill with phd water mash it around for a bit drain it squeeze it transplant and water with nutrients....works for me

maybe one day i will run a side by side with a few plants with each and see if the difference if any justifies the cost.
 
I use the CocoTek bricks and don't rinse. Just hydrate with nutrient solution and add 25% perlite. Someone was asking about organic coco, General Organics works great for this although some don't consider it true organics (particularly the camg+). FYI -- I've done with and without perlite and the perlite plants seemed to have a slight edge.
