Cold weather and resin production/flowering times

Green Biologist - Good point. Humidity definitely plays a role, but it is hard to isolate low humidity from low temperature experimentally..... at least for us without access to a laboratory. I have a feeling both play a part in resin production. More research is definitely needed on the subject.

OZUT - another intriguing hypothesis. The only way to know for sure is to do the experiment. I am going to chop down a branch put it in the fridge for 12 hours just like it was in the grow room. Then Ill chop another branch and keep it in darkness for 24 hours and compare.
Actually, if you chop it, the darkness won't do anything for it....Just cover it the last 2-3 days before chopping it...Either put a box on it, or put is in a closet, just don't chop it because it won't do anything...the plant has to be alive so it realizes it's at the end of it's life cycle

Actually I was going to chop a small bud with stem and all and put the stem in water.... like a rose for me mummy........ but this rose will get you lit. Do you think that will work?

Damn....I got totally loaded and forgot to do the experiment!!!!!! Well the weed was still good regardless. I took a couple snapshots of some cured non-refrigerated buds. The strain is bubba kush x OG Kush. curedROG2.jpgcuredROG1.jpg

Those look GREAT!! I don't know if a dark cycle would have made a difference.

I tried both refridge and just darkness on two plants and the fridged one seemed liked the resin was more pronounced...

Have been growing an OG kush clone for years and have noticed many slight differences depending on grow conditions:

1) If plant is subjected to colder temps(62 - 68F), resin production seems to increase, flowering times decrease but so does yield.

2) If plant is subjected to warmer temps(75 - 80F), resin production decreases, flowering times increase but yields increase also.

3) Some subtle differences noticed when using different nutes, additives etc. but environment seems most important when using same genetics.

Anyone else noticed similar environmental effects?
I've noticed similar results as you, but with different variables. My understanding is that the plant will produce more resin when it is stressed. This stress could be temperature induced, along with many other things. I had a crop that got NAILED by spider mites in the last couple weeks of flowering, and MAN, it was perhaps the stickiest bud I've seen from that strain. This a strain that I've worked with for 18 months, so I've had plenty of crops to compare it with. I've also messed with temperatures to the same effect, and had similar results. The plants will also respond this way when introduced to higher UVB levels (another stress) via metal halide lights.

What you're noticing could be the plants natural defense mechanism to environmental stresses.

Seasmoke - Ill have to wait until next time around to do the fridge thing. My buddy and I had a funny idea to grow inside a commercial refrigerator. We could put a 1000W Hps in there and grow at any temp between 32 - 72F. Would be cool to see how different temps effect the same genetics. For example grow 1 - run at 72/grow 2 - run at 68 etc......

Stowandgrow - Very good points. I cant believe your spidermite problem turned out that good. Thats an experiment I dont want to mess with.

I know this is old but I was told by a caregiver that he adds a half bag of ice to the tope of his plants the third and second day before chop right before the lights go off, he said it tricks the roots into thinking there is a frost, the plants produce more resin but the buds don't suffer as they would in frost. I've done it and it definitely doesn't hurt the plants. I would need a lab to be sure if it's working though. Just thought this might help!

I saw this thread and after reading some posts i thought i would share this little document i have found and i am deffanatly going to be experimenting with trying to get my girls to sugar up even more in the last week or two of floweringView attachment 2946555

I am a big believer in 3 days darkness and during that 3 days I try to get my temps around 55 degrees for those 3 days.
I am a big believer because I see it do it's magic with my own eyes. A combination of darkness (it is dark in the fridge as well) and cool temps has an effect, imho.

I've read of people chopping their entire plant and sticking it in a bucket of ice water in a dark room for the last 48 hours. Seems like the same idea just different methods of going about it. Lemme see if I can find that thread...

EDIT: It seems that most people using ice water just flush with it while putting the plant in 24-48 hrs of darkness.

I've been putting my plant outside in the 45 degree weather,I've seen a huge difference in it and the other plants the same age,but there is a slight difference in the bud size.
