Compact closet grow, is this too small?

okay so here is how my closet is set up:

The question I have is is how wide does this need to be? Right now the grow box I was going to fit into my closet is 13'' wide and was wondering if that would work? Then I would have an inch on each side of the box between the walls.

Let me know what you think, and I am planning on growing 1 plant in this setup (2 boxes).

Also, what light(s) would you use in this system?

Thanks guys

After doing some research it seems I should try and do CFL's for the veg and HPS for the flowering so how many CFL's should I use per plant?

I was thinking 3 CFL's per plant (how many watts should they be?), and then 1 50w HPS per plant during veg.

Tell me what you think!

Thanks for the comments, I have changed the set up of my closet, and will have 2 boxes instead of one now, with 1 being a veg box and the other a flower box (or so I hope), here is the new setup:

So would you guys recommend a 150w HPS in each box or how many watts should I get?

I know heat is sometimes an issue with HPS's so will this be okay? I plan on having some fans for intake and outtake (with a carbon filter), so let me know how it'll do.

Thanks for all the help!!

for that size closet, 1 x 150 watt hps will be fine for what you're doing, that's 7500 lumens/sq.ft. which is ample.

a 150 watt hps puts off as much heat as 150 worth of CFL's but you get more lumens and more importantly better penetration so the lower leaves get more light. as long as you keep it well ventilated you'll be fine.

and don't forget to veg at least 3 plants to be sure you get a female. you could prolly fit two plants in there for flowering.

I'll be using feminized seeds so hopefully males won't be an issue...right?

And also I will be LST'ing the plants to get as much yield as possible.

okay just ordered the e-conolight 150w HPS and was wondering should I try 2 plants in my first grow (2 different strains) or just 1? Right now it is 21'' wide and thus could I seemingly have 2 10'' pots in there?

Thanks guys!!

mostly bumped to see thought on 1 or 2 plants in this setup, hah.

Kind of want to start out with 2 plants but we'll see what people think, and I'll check out your grow too, thanks!

u can do an SoG grow, plant a bunch of little plants in like 32oz bottles, and pump out like 2 clones a week, for like 6 weeks, and wen harvest time comes around ..u harvest every week, check out my SoG grow, i got the 150w hps from e con light...im doing, 3-4 clones every week for about 6-8 weeks, so wen the first batch are ready for harvest u have another harvrst nxt week, and so on..but u probably only get like 6-10g per plant, times by 4 plants,40g every week..that sounds good to me haha .goodluck

thanks for the suggestion soudy, so you are just growing everything 12/12? I only have 1 space to grow so don't know how exactly I could get this to work with my setup

When you say "box" you aren't talking cardboard are you? That would be a GIGANTIC fire hazard with an HPS.

Silvertipped and I are using 2x 150 HPS as well, vegging them under cfl's but I think I'll try and convince him to use the HPS for all. Good luck!

I am talking cardboard, and others have stated that the heat with the 150w HPS is not that bad, and with the correct ventilation (i'll have an intake and outtake fan) it will not be an issue.

Anyone else think that it could potentially get too hot in there / be a fire hazard?

Using a cardboard box is not such a good idea. Cardboard is an ideal medium for fungus and mold to grow upon. Spilled water and even the humidity in the air will permeate the cardboard creating the perfect environment for molds and fungus. You'd be much better off using treated plywood.

This man speaks the truth! ANY kind of wood for that matter, just some float board used for flooring(verry cheap and pretty sturdy) would be %100 safer than cardboard. Build one using a board, a saw, some screws, and some 90degree joint plates. Good luck! Get the treated plywood if you can afford it!:eyesmoke:
