Computer Problems, I need some help

Alright i need some help with my computer. Over the past 3-4 days its been running extremely slow. Even while im typing now it seems to freeze for a short period of time and just continue as nothing happen. I told my brother about it, and he told me it might have to do with the fact that my AntiVirus software just expired about 3 weeks ago, and apparently im not protected from virus, and trojans. Im not very good with computers so im open to suggestions from just about anyone. Oh yea if it matters i have a gateway xp computer.

yer get some trusted antivirus first, then u might wana download ccleaner( crap cleaner) it just deletes all random crap on ur pc and makes it a tiny bit faster, also try defragging, click start-programs-accesories-system tools-defragg(something like that, cant be sure its off top of my head) should make it a little faster

It could be any number of things. Spyware, adware, background processes, flaky memory, flaky processor, all of the above or none of the above. Its the joys of computers, just have troubleshoot and rule things out as you go. Unfortunetly there are no full proof ways of diagnosing symptoms such as yours. Its one of those things a tech just needs to sit down with and snoop around until something shows up.

Thanks for the responds, ive been surfing the net looking for anything that might help. But the easiest thing i found to do in my current condition is rebooting my computer. I mean i dont really have anything important saved to it. And i just noticed i get a shit load of pop up ads now. So im pretty sure i have to much spyware, and adware.

Download a program called spybot. While I do not put alot of faith in these programs, it seems to do as good of job as anything else.
