I am a roofer in Ottawa Canada. I don't have any pics of any of the work if done but I take pride in my work and measure twice cut once. I also do stuff on the side occasionally (fences, framing, install garage doors etc.) I can build pretty much anything. Here is my lil grow cabinet I converted. It's my first grow so take it easy on my I'm still learning. Sick thread idea by the way props:lol:

I have worked in a few different trades in construction. I was a journeyman Ironworker in Boston for a while. Last winter I was hired as a pipefitter/welder to work in Anarctica and stayed at the South Pole. I just finished a job as a tin knocker at a Federal Prison. I like to change it up and learn as much as I can. I have a trailer with a welder and torches and all kinds of tools to do about anything. Keep it up guys.

I just found a few pics from my time in Antarctica. This is 6" sch. 80 pipe that carries gasoline from a tanker ship in the port, up to a 2 million gallon tank for storage. It requires x-rays to ensure that it won't break. The second pic is of the same type of pipe with the ocean ice runway in the background. We used c-130's and c-17's to get there from New Zealand.

I was hired as an Ironworker for erecting a building at the South Pole. I got altitude sickness at the pole and had to come back to the coast. The south pole is on about 9500 ft of ice so the sudden change in elevation screwed me up. I ended up doing a bunch of pipe as a pipefitter for the rest of the season. On a side note, the south pole station has some INSANE hydroponic equipment for veggies. I know for a fact that there has been weed grown down there.

Hey douche, my dad also worked on a pipeline. Mostly here in the US, some in alaska, and some in Iceland.

My dad is a mechanic, same with his dad, so I have grown up around tools, just ones that work on cars (and planes in g-dads case). I'm slowly teaching myself construction.

I helped my neighbor raise half his house 6 inches (no kidding 6 inches over two days, good thing there was no plaster in the house). It is amazing what a 6 ton bottle jack will do.

I completely replaced the electrical system at my house. From the riser, to the panel, new ground, rewired everything, new outlets. I passed inspection too. Before I started reading I had never even seen the inside of an outlet.

I've put in a couple new, larger windows at the house. Knocking a huge hole in the wall is fun.

I put a bathtub where a shower used to be. Taught myself to do plumbing. Putting pipe together was a good time. And I really like using the torch, only burnt a couple of studs with it accidentally. Also had to knock out a new drain. Man nothing relieves stress like breaking up concrete.

I've hung 2 doors from scratch, and replaced 3.

I built a little brick retaining wall, dug out a good footing and layed the bricks pretty level and even, for the first time ever working with mortar and concrete.

I'm planning on building a new room onto the back of the house, so we have room to have a kid.

Eventually, in few years, I want to design and build our entire house. We're moving and buying a lot of land.

All the real construction people who have been doing this forever, please forgive my gushing. I just think construction is so great. It's like if you can imagine it, you can make it. (now if only the materials were free)

I've been building stuff with my dad since I was like 12 years old. Fences, remodeling the back of our house, and eventually the other bathroom. He used to work for a contractor in high school, and he knows pretty well how to do all of that stuff; just passed it on to me. I've also built some nice furniture that is currently in my parents' house. I love building, and working with my hands, it's so rewarding. But, alas, I'm in college 900 miles from home with no tools to work with. It sucks. But I did make my own wooden pipe out of a large pecan tree branch; tastes nice and everyone who sees it thinks it's sick that I made it from scratch with a pocket knife and small hand saw. But, enough bragging, you real contractors, roofers, plumbers etc. are the real men here. I'd love to get back into carpentry, that's by far my favorite.

This is the kind of stuff that we need to start doing again as a people. We need people to cut trees and work in sawmills and build houses. It is my dream to start a vocational high school in my area. For years all the teachers and advisors made kids think that if they didn't get a degree as a doctor or a computer programmer they would be a failure. Without people like us the country would come to a halt. And good for you Jigfresh, the more you do yourself the prouder you will be of it.

Whats up fellow construction workers! lol

So I have been working in construction for about 8 years. I started in pond construction(1 1/2 year or so) then I went on to steel framing and drying walling(1 year) then it was door/window installation(1 1/2 years). Now I have the perfect stoner job aside from food tester lol.
Im a custom carpenter. I have been doing it for 4 years now and am the top carpenter for the company I work for. I have done work for professional baseball and football players.
Anyway heres some of my work

Youve got a great dream there douche, I think youre right on the point about people in our field being a dying breed. Im a welder and metal fabricator, Ive worked for contractors and small shops for the past 5 or 6 years making anything from saltwater purification systems for G.E., nuclear waste disposal systems, processing lines and systems for food sanitation, and anything in between, my specialty being making custom case specific solutions for anything from organization to engineering. The one thing I have noticed in these past years is that no matter how much the pay is the number of skilled american born welders and metal workers is decreasing severly for the same reason you brought up... most teachers give an almost condiscending opinion of careers that involve WORK. I was just laid off after skating through 3 previous cuts. The company is going down the shitter because GE is sending all the contracts to countries who will do it cheaper. And finding a job that pays without having to take a piss is impossible and the govt doesnt pay shit for unemployment in fact I called them and told them they could shove that 250 a week up there ass, I can go to fuck mcdonalds and bring home more than that. Maybe Ill just knock up an illegal and cash in on her govt benefits Tax free I might add. What the fuck has happend to this country??
