Controlling smell without tent

For my indoor DWC grow I'm opting to go no tent. I see most people use carbon filters to deal with the smell. Can these work for open spaces? I expect she'll start gettin smelly soon so I'm wondering what would be the best way to handle it. I'm growing legally in an apartment, I could leave a window open.

Here's the setup:

It's the same equipment as a tent but when used that way it's typically called a scrubber. It's recommended to get a filter+fan that will exchange 1/2-1/3 of the room's air every minute. In other words exchange all of the room's air every 2 or 3 minutes. Depends on where you look. Canfilter has a nifty calculator you can check out.

You can just stick the fan on the filter and tuck it in the corner or, you could connect them (maybe add a silencer) and put the scrubber behind your couch or something. I personally have a Phresh 8x39 with a Cloudline T8 sitting on top of it in the corner of my living room similar to what TintEastwood has going on but your living room honestly looks a lot nicer than mine and it might stick out. Also, if you do it know that you'll have dust accumulate where the fan blows. That whole corner and the nearby decorations gets dusty as fuck.

How are you planning to do dark cycles?

thanks for the detailed response, looks like I'll be going for 600 CFM. The dust is fine, a lot more fixable than the smell lol. I'm planning to keep her on an 18-6 cycle.

Right on. I was just thinking that if you're concerned about smell, you're probably flowering her in that space, right? If that's true, a proper 12 hours of dark is required. That's all I was getting at. I know my living room never sees 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness.

Unless it's an auto. If it's an auto you won't need uninterrupted darkness.

Why can't you have a tent? Homebox Vista Triangle+ would look great in that corner. I wouldn't be able to live in a living room that has a big ass inline fan and a filter, I have an S&P TD-500 Silent and a big filter I use as a scrubber in the room I'm growing in and it's LOUD even though the S&P fans are pretty much the most quiet inline fans available. I also use an S&P TD-350 Silent in my tent and you can't even hear it.

Hey man, you should try to cover the light, if you dont want to buy a tent. Grow lights are too intense, and might hurt your eyes in the long run, if you are sitting in the couch.

I might consider yeah but rn I don't spend much time there and it's low enough to where I don't see it.

What is the reason for not wanting a tent? Seems silly leaving it and the light out in your living space like that.
I know a tent would be beneficial but I'm trying to experiment. I like the look of it as a corner plant and I don't really like the idea of a big tent in the corner of the room.

How will you make sure of the dark period for your plants? Or are they autos?

Also 600cfm fan and filter is gonna be LOUD in your living room!!!

she's an auto yeah, otherwise I would vegetate her forever :-P Turns out 600 CFM is like impossible to find it's either 400 or 800 so I went with 400 and spent a little extra on the quietest fan I could find ~32 dB. So hopefully not too bad.

If you're growing legally why bother? That 1 plant auto grow likely won't smell much. Crack a window like you said.

honestly yeah maybe I could get away with it, I picked this girl because she is supposed to be not very smelly, but with this being my first time I can't really know how much it will smell until I get there. I guess it's a good precaution, I am renting so I won't be here long and I don't want to leave it smelling too much when I leave. Also maybe if I increase the size of my operation in the future it could be a nice to have.
