hi I am about to replace /convert my 6x 600w open reflector hps lights and put them into cooltubes , please can I get some advice on what size cooltube would be best and will my ballast I have be ok to just change everything over to cooltubes

is the size just to determine what size vent to put on them or does it effect bulb size , light spread etc?

also could I ask what power fan I would need to blow through 6 x 600w hps cooltubes all in one straight line

To make sure the last two bulbs in the series don't get the hottest. I'd use an 8". The duct would need to be clamped at the connections. If the bulbs were cooled in sets of three, two 6".

I have used 5 inch and 8 inch cool tubes with 600w and both worked. Probably best with a 6 inch. I normally rate the fan from the light so whatever you were using before should work.

6" at the front and another 6" at the back. One pushing, the other pulling. That should cool all the bulbs uniformly. Devil in the details. Might be optimal with an 8" pushing and a 6" pulling...

You will need, 6 x 600w divided by 2 plus 20%, that is the fan rating you should get (or how I normally work it out). i.e something clearing around 2100m(cubed) I am in europe and thats how we calculate. I ordered my cooltubes through China and they were like $27 each plus shipping (probably about 50$ each) - 8inch tubes. I have used them for years without problems.

If you're only going to run 600s, 6" cool tubes, 8"fan pulling from a 6x6x8" "T" in the middle. So: light>light>light>"T">light>light>light. Should provide the most even cooling.

If you ever think you'll run 1000s, get the 8" cool tubes, step everything up to the next size, so 8x8x10 "T" and a 10" fan ...better to have to much and dial it down.

I cool a 1000 in a A.C. hood and 2 600s in cool tubes, set up similarly, with a 6" and a booster.

Cool tubes do put out less light, due to the glass, but because they are cooled they can get much closer to the canopy, almost negating the difference.

If you can find 8" hoods, I'd go that route, you'll be able to move air through the system at a much higher rate. I like that T idea too, never thought of that.

I used them in tents and for years they sit in a bin in the barn in case I need the sockets some day then I'll toss them

ok so i have baught a box fan which is 10' and moves 2500 m3 . i am going to run 6x 600w open hps and 1 600w led in the space in sets of 3 like this
- - - - - - . i will have 2 intake fans pulling in fresh air from outside and the box fan pulling hot air out and a osculating fan. also i have a water pump system . how many plug sockets should i run these too without being dangerous and will the heat still be too much?

try to find a conversion for 2400 watts to btus. that will give you an idea of how much cooling you'll need.

as for sockets, you need to calculate amps drawn by each lamp. and figure out how many circuits you'll need, not sockets.

one 15A circuit can safely run at 80% of rating.

You need 4 15 amp circuits, or 3 20 amp circuits, @120V, just for the lights. Figure at least 1 more 15 amp for fans, etc, etc. Ever consider going 240V on the lights?
