Correctly Jar Curing with RH meter

So here is what happened:

1. Lights shut off and left in the dark for 48 hours.
2. Cut and hung
3. Waited until the stems would snap but not break
4. Fully trimmed and put on drying rack for 1-2 days
5. Put into jars with RH meter caps.

Ok, so on step 5, they were put into jars filled 1/2 way and the RH reading today (Almost 12 hours wait time) is 50%! How can this be, when the room was kept at 55% RH and 75 degrees… It hasn't been that long they were drying.

So, I did fill up two more jars the full way this time and put the caps on them. Is it that they haven't had enough time to accumulate higher % in the jar, or are they over dried?

I really depends. I found if you jar them too early you will know fairly quickly but if you didn't then it will take a little longer. Based on the temp and RH in the room and from my experience, you might have done the drying rack for 1 day too long but I highly doubt you ruined them. I'm gunna guess your gauges read between 61 and 62 after 12 more hours.

Great man thanks… I'll keep an eye on them.. Still pretty low as of now though… How come you asked me which RH caps I was using? Do you use those ones? They were sitting out for a couple months since I bought them… Are they faulty or anything?

I only asked because these are the ones I use and I love them! I was hoping you were using the same ones :)

You might need to stay patient and give them a few days. Whatever you do, keep the jar closed for the time being until we can figure out where they're at.

Yea man, they haven't changed at all yet, but will be keeping an eye on them for sure! It does smell great though! Thanks a ton!

I put a regular RH meter in one jar and the caps on others. The RH in the jar says 55%, the others say 45-50%… So not sure what's up with them.. I just bought them like 4 months ago.

IMAG0257.jpg I would like to make a suggestion on how to dial in the right rh once in the jar. I won't speak on drying before jarring as it depends on your technique (to be read as what temp and rh you dry your buds with). But I will say that Boveda makes a product called "humidipaks" that control rh within +/-1%. You can buy them in varying rh levels. From (I think) 75% down to 62%. 62% being the current generally agreed on ideal rh to cure under. Inside this jar I have about 35 wet grams of 3 day dried product (It was on the airy end of the bud density spectrum) in it with one 8g pack (8 grams dry material that is). After jarring for 12 hours the rh rose to 64%, I burped for about 2 hours, then sealed again. It's been almost 36 hours and the rh is dead on 62% with an internal temperature of just a fraction below 70°f, as you can see in the included picture. After the first 12 hours the hay smell that you typically come into was starting to dwindle. So if you like these hygrometer lids, buy some humidipaks! They make it exponentially easier to get the exact rh you need to cure. They're cheap too. A 12 pack of 8g bags only cost me $10 on Amazon. And (despite what Boveda says) they last forever (well, until the package or salt inside decays) by simply rehydrating them once they solidify after about a years use.

I'm sorry the RH has not gone up for you. That really sucks man. I would not give up though. Keep them jarred up and don't burp them very often. Hopefully the smell and taste will improve but I've read once they hit sub 55%, the gig is up.

Only if the internal moisture percentage of the flower reaches sub ~55%. Sometimes it takes a full 24 hours for a jarred hygrometer to display accurately. Your best bet @Breezee77 would be to keep that jar sealed for at least 24 hours. If after that it still reads below 55% then there's nothing you can do to finish removing/converting the sugars, starches, and chlorophyll without water curing. Which I highly advise against unless you have some truly nasty regs/mids. But like said above, don't give up!

How do you rehydrate the boveda packs? I have some, but they are hard now.

I actually think it's something wrong with the caps. I put in a regular RH meter inside the jars and it says 56%, but the cap only says 45-50%… I don't understand why all 4 caps would be bad though… I don't think they are over dried. And yes they have been sealed for several days.
